The West Texas VA Health Care System (WTVAHCS) provides a variety of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology as well as offering numerous educational programs. Outpatient services include: Ambulatory Care, Mental Health, Women's Health, Transition and Care Management, Home Based Primary Care, Tele-Health, Anticoagulation Clinics, Ophthalmology, and Dentistry. Skilled nursing care and acute rehabilitation is provided in the Community Living Center, with specialty referrals to other VISN 17 facilities and community services. Staffed with approximately 600 employees, the facility serves counties in West Texas and New Mexico area, with a Veteran population of approximately 57,000. The WTVAHCS is part of the VA Heart of Texas Health Care Network, VISN 17 and is centrally located at the crossroads of Interstate 20 and Highway 87 in Big Spring, Texas with Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOC's) located in Abilene, Odessa, San Angelo, Ft. Stockton, Texas and Hobbs, New Mexico.

The incumbent is a Physical Therapy Assistant in the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Service for the for The West Texas VA Health Care System Located at the Abilene Clinic in Abilene, TX. Primary duties consist of:
Providing therapeutic services including treatment, advisory and consultative functions to Veterans.
Providing direct patient care according to licensure limitations and guidelines.
Assisting in developing and implementing physical therapy treatments using judgment to modify treatment as a result of changing medical conditions.
Systematically and continuously review plans of care of Veterans with complex disabilities and, in conjunction with Physical Therapists, adapt and modify those plans, activities, and procedures.
Assist multidisciplinary medical teams in the coordination of patients overall treatment and discharge plans.
Evaluate and recommend need for equipment related to patient locomotion, mobility/stability, and safe home environment.
Submit and assist in formulating performance evaluations, materials for management briefings, and monthly staff meetings.
Coordinate supplies and equipment as assigned by the Supervisory Physical Therapist.
Supervise and instruct volunteers who work in or observe physical therapy as part of their prerequisites for admission to a Professional Health Care School.
Work Schedule: Monday thru Friday. 8:00am to 4:30pm. Some weekends maybe required.

Qualifications And EvaluationQualifications
Education: Successful completion of an associate's degree from an accredited community college, junior college, college, or university in a physical therapy assistant education program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE).
Experience: Appointment or promotion to the GS-6 level requires at least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level characterized by working under direct supervision, but needing guidance by more experienced staff members only for more complex patient treatment. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
Knowledge of evidence based physical therapy practice.
Knowledge of physical therapy data collection and ongoing assessment techniques in order to perform specified aspects of patient evaluation and interventions.
Knowledge of basic biological and medical science to assess patient data; make a preliminary determination of their needs; develop treatment goals and objectives; and implement patient treatment plans.
- Appointment or promotion to the GS-7 level requires at least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level characterized by previous work in a comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation program where the candidate also provided patient education to the patient and caregivers. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to organize data, format that data into a presentation, and present information pertinent to patient care in formal or informal settings. Examples may include providing in-service training to staff or formal presentations to the treatment team.
Knowledge of contemporary physical therapy practice. This may be demonstrated through continuing education courses, in-service training, or journal article reviews.
Ability to independently implement selected components of interventions identified in the plan of care established by the physical therapist.

Physical Requirements: As a Physical Therapy Assistant you will be required to perform heavy lifting greater than 45 pounds, straight pulling, pushing, reaching above shoulder, use of fingers with both hands, frequent walking, standing, crawling, kneeling, repeated bending, climbing with legs and arms, operation of crane or motor vehicle, vision with ability to distinguish colors, and hearing with aid permitted.
