DutiesMajor Duties

This position is located in Radiology Service at the Amarillo VA Healthcare System, Amarillo, TX. The Lead Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (Magnetic Resonance Imaging, also known as Lead DRT (MRI)) responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Assists radiologists in the less complex fluoroscopic examinations.

  • Prepares contrast materials under the direction of the radiologist for the purpose of performing exams requiring injectable solutions such as IVP, cystogram, cholangiograms fistulagrams and arthrography and for the purpose of performing oral and rectal exams of the GI tract.

  • Responsible to the radiologists and supervisory for the quality and quantity of radiographic exams performed in order to assure a high level of acceptability of radiographs while minimizing patient dosage and reducing costs.

  • Practices radiation safety in order to reduce exposure to patient, staff, and self.

  • Performs image processing procedures such as loading and uploading cassettes on CR digitizers, adjusting image quality when necessary and printing images when required in order to provide adequate and proper processed radiologic examinations.

  • Maintains records and files of exams performed on patients.

  • Properly identifies the patient and the images are marked accurately to prevent any mistaken identification does not occur.

  • Explains exams to patients so that the patient understands what is to be done as well as what hazards, if any, are possible.

  • Performs radiologic exams at the bedside and in the operating rooms providing diagnostic x-rays to the surgeons and professional staff on patients that are unable to be x-rayed in the Radiology Service due to incapacity or surgical procedures.

  • Responsible for cleanliness and stocking adequate levels of supplies in assigned areas.

  • Must maintain a professional and cooperative attitude to be able to work with other employees.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MR). This specialty modality requires additional knowledge of super conducting magnets, the physics of superconducting magnets, and how they relate to the human anatomy in medical imaging. The technologist must be educated in the safety factors governing a magnetic environment that patients, visitors, and equipment enter into. The practitioner must have specific specialized knowledge of cross sectional anatomy and how it relates to the soft tissues and vessels of the human body. The technologist must also have specialized knowledge in the radio-frequency surface coils required for each specific anatomical area to be imaged. The technologist requires knowledge of image acquisition in Computerized Radiography (CR) and Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS). This subspecialty requires advanced ARRT certification.

Qualifications And EvaluationQualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

  • English Language Proficiency. DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d).

  • Certification. All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for Computed Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Advanced certification indicates that the technologist has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination.

  • Education. Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate's degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from schools accredited by the ARRT and certification by the ARRT in radiology.

  • Grandfathering Provision. All persons employed in VHA as a DRT on the effective date of this qualification standard are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the title, series and grade held, including positive education and certification that are part of the basic requirements of the DRT occupation.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Preferred Experience: Experience in setting up and or running an MRI safety program.

Grade Determinations:


(a) Experience. At least 1 year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level.

(b) Assignments. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time. DRTs at this grade level may be appointed to one of the following assignments:

Diagnostic Radiologic Team Leader. Functions as a lead DRT for a group of DRTs. Provides a full range of general radiologic treatment procedures, has a broad knowledge of the different modalities within the diagnostic radiologic area, and is accountable to the next higher-level supervisor. The candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment-specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*):

a. Ability to provide feedback to supervisor on technical aspects of work;

*b. Ability to resolve informal employee complaints;

*c. Ability to monitor and report on the status and progress of work, and make adjustments to accomplish the workload in accordance with established procedures; and

d. Skill to independently perform general and specialized diagnostic radiologic procedures in advanced levels of complex treatment situations.
