Xcel Energy is hiring a Regional Director of Construction and Line Operations. This position will be located in Amarillo, TX and will require 25% travel. The ideal candidate will have heavy leadership experience in the competitive construction industry as well as knowledge of substation or transmission line operations.

This position requires a behavioral assessment prior to being considered for an interview.


Responsible for providing leadership, strategic direction, and daily operation direction for all activities to support transmission and substation construction, transmission line field operations, transmission civil construction and transmission trucking. Achieves organizational, safety, productivity, construction schedule performance, construction cost performance, and reliability targets by leading and directing the employees within the organization. Works cross jurisdictionally to establish competitive bidding and execution strategy. Responsible for the implementation of cross regional operational strategies, communicating organizational vision, mission, objectives and behavioral expectations aligned with operational excellence. Providing a safe, stimulating and rewarding work environment.


• Leads and directs the regional planning process, sets objectives and courses of action that align with corporate and business unit goals. Anticipates and positions the organization to meet future business needs in a competitive environment. Accountable for attainment of corporate policies and organizational goals and objectives.

• Provides strategic leadership and direction for transmission line and substation construction, transmission line maintenance, civil construction, trucking. Supports the development of the annual transmission maintenance work plans. Develops, approves and manages budget to support work plans and operating budgets which supports operational performance and compliance.

• Leads and directs the organization in a commitment to continuous improvement, effectively monitoring and reengineering core processes for the improvement of performance. Applies industry and Xcel Energy best practices, core and behavioral competencies and success factors to establish work performance goals and expectations. Administers the development and utilization of standard policies and procedures for the organization relating to transmission maintenance and construction practices.

• Responsible for effective and efficient use of union and non-union resources with emphasis on safety, reliability, customer satisfaction and compliance with regulations. Involved with union negotiations specific to department rules for all areas of geographic responsibility supported by represented employees.


• Bachelor's degree in engineering, or construction management, or journeyman electrician or lineman certification or equivalent technical education.

• 10-15 years experience in heavy construction or the equivalent combination of education and experience in the utility and/or construction industry.

• 8 years in a management position responsible for managing construction and/or substation or transmission line construction organizations consisting of both represented and non-represented employees.

• 5 years experience operating and managing large and cost sensitive projects in a competitive environment.

• 5 years experience with risk management and safety.

• Proficient in Microsoft software; Excel, Word and other related construction database systems.

• Ability to Travel 25% of the time.
