This position is primarily responsible for managing the distribution center’s safety and QA initiatives and to provide continuous job and skill training for all aspects of foodservice operations with an emphasis on Warehouse and Driver training initiatives. This position is tasked with staying abreast of the federal and state regulations related to the food distribution industry. This position is responsible for understanding and communicating all aspects of safety and ensuring all operational activities are performed in a safe manner and maintaining food quality.


Other duties may be assigned. A teammate in this position must have the ability to:

  • Oversee and lead all safety awareness initiatives and programs to include all McLane Safety Best Practice and Procedures.

  • Partner with the department heads as needed in order to manage all safety related training, including but not limited to Pure Safety, MHE, lifting, defensive driving, PTDC, sanitation, CPR/First Aid, and new hire driver training.

  • Participate in World Class Driver Training Program and World Class Warehouse Training Program to include classroom facilitation on safety and QA topics.

  • Communicate importance of working safely to all new teammates and reinforce working safe habits in all departments daily.

  • Participate in all distribution center (DC) teammate meetings by providing timely updates about the center’s safety performance. These presentations should include period/YTD statistics on Accident Frequency, Injury Frequency and Lost Time occurrences.

  • Ensure all operations are in compliance with government regulations and requirements, to include DOT, OSHA, local and state agencies, and other agencies as needed.

  • Manage accident and injury review boards

  • Manage incident investigations by actively investigating all injury and all accidents to determine root cause. Conduct root cause analysis to determine proactive approach to incident avoidance.

  • Audit injury and accident files for accuracy with documentation and adherence to best practices.

  • Manage safety committee meetings by working with teammate safety committee chairperson on agenda, meeting schedule and “hot topic” listing/safety challenges to address for each meeting.

  • Oversee maintenance of documentation for all safety and training activities

  • Monitor ELM completion rates and provide leaders with timely progress reports from LMS Administrator.

  • Work with the GM and operations staff on improving and maintaining safety culture.

  • Participate in route rides and warehouse days in an effort to “connect” with our teammates and gain valuable insights on various working conditions, challenges and obstacles.

  • Manage the DC in preparing for Safety and QA audits.

  • Maintain a flexible work schedule (nights and weekends) to meet the changing training needs of the Distribution Center and Transportation departments.

  • Have the physical capabilities to work in all aspects of our distribution business including cold and warm temperatures at any time day or night.

  • Concurrently balance and manage multiple priorities and projects.

  • Ensure all safety-related requirements are met, to include monthly safety committee meetings, safety 5-Os, required review and communication of the Management Safety Standards, safety topic reviews during teammate meetings, safety blitz’, updating the safety awareness boards, post-accident and injury preventability rulings, retraining, and other activities as required in order to maintain an active, deliberate safety culture.

  • Work with the Risk Management team to ensure all required safety policies and procedures are followed at all times.

  • Act as an expert for quality assurance. Must understand all customer QA requirements and relevant government entities.

  • Maintain procedures and training manuals required to ensure compliance with QA requirements

  • Facilitate all federal, state and local inspections of the facility including documentation of the site visit.

  • Conduct internal inspections to ensure All QA records and logs are maintained properly.

  • Ensure all operations are in compliance with government regulations and requirements (i.e. DOT, OSHA, local and state agencies, etc.)

  • Partner with department managers to provide QA guidance and hold teams accountable for compliance.

Minimum Qualifications and Requirements :

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field

  • 5-7 years experience in Environmental, Health and Safety field

  • Understanding of computer software related to record keeping and communication. Preferred experience with Microsoft Office Applications.

  • Experience in managing, training, and directing large work groups

  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, procedure manuals, inter-company and outside correspondence.

  • Experience in planning and or analytical reporting.

  • Be able to read, write, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, and technical procedures.

  • Be able to understand financial statements and cost implications. Possess ability to identify issues and present effective solutions.

  • Be able to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, vendors, and Teammates.

  • Have strong communication skills and work within the framework of a team.

  • Be able to successfully pass drug screen and background check
