What it’s like to work in the Data Science Lab:

The 3M HIS Data Science Lab is the "forward looking lab" in the 3M Health Information Systems (HIS) organization and therefore our responsibility is to identify and develop new technologies within the organization. Our mission is to “Improve healthcare through developing new technologies that leverage data analytics and algorithms" The successful candidate will be responsible for leading new technology development in the area of healthcare analytics. Many of the projects that we pursue are "high risk" with "high potential" and require a significant amount of courage and energy for completion. We are looking for passionate, hardworking, intelligent colleagues to join our high-performing research and development team.

Engineers in the Data Science Lab live at the intersection of research and development. They work closely with the Data Scientist, developing new technologies that leverage data analytics, as well as, the 3M HIS’ production teams, to transform those analytics into commercial software. Successful candidates have a unique exposure to both commercial software development as well as new technology, research development and can successfully translate that research into scalable, reliable commercial software.

Primary Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Convert and implement machine learning and mathematical algorithms into prototype and production systems

  • Work with production teams to integrate algorithms/models into final release of software.

  • This position calls for both software engineering skills, and expertise in implementing mathematical methods and algorithms

  • Ensure 3M HIS’s big data analytics capabilities are current with the state-of-the-art

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited university and/or minimum of three or more (3+) years of experience in lieu of the education requirement

  • Minimum of three or more (3+) years of Software Engineering experience

  • Minimum of one or more (1+) combined years of Algorithm Development and/or applying machine learning technologies in a large-scale industrial production environment, including deployments to cloud infrastructure (Coursework Experience included)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong software engineering skills

  • Experience with Java/C#, SQL, Python

  • Experience with distributed computing and the Hadoop ecosystem, including Spark

  • Healthcare industry experience

  • Experience with and knowledge of database systems including OLTP, Data Warehouse, and NoSQL systems

  • Experience developing within the Amazon Web Services (AWS) platform along with a working knowledge of AWS products and services

  • Experience in architecting large data storage solutions. This includes NoSQL systems as well as data modeling for data warehouse systems

  • Experience in implementing systems that interact with multiple web services. Familiarity with web development concepts such as REST, authentication, and authorization

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Seeking a fast paced, test-driven, collaborative and iterative engineering environment.

  • Strong planning and time management skills

  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills

  • Highly self-directed and able to manage and prioritize multiple concurrent and competing or conflicting challenges and issues

  • Demonstrated team player with results-oriented track record

  • Experience with distributed analytics software such as Hadoop

  • Excel at making complex concepts simple and easy to understand by those around you
