Job Description


Hardware Advanced Development group is a team within the Oracle Labs

organization tasked with developing enabling technologies and systems

that revolutionize the performance and scalability of relational

database and analytics applications in a Big Data world.

As a

Laboratory (server room) operations and Senior IT engineer, you will be

responsible for building and maintaining the server room facilities and

systems therein to ensure the success of our hardware and software

development teams. The ideal candidate is an individual with a mix of

system administration, network administration, and development skills.

He or she will have experience supporting production environments and a

demonstrated ability to quickly adapt to emerging requirements while

maintaining a stable core infrastructure. He or she is expected to work

with architects and developers to develop a deep understanding of the

problem space and offer timely and creative solutions that translate

requirements into scalable and reliable development systems. He or she

will be responsible for all day-to-day aspects of lab operations while

helping to define and implement new processes and providing input that

ensure the success of our platforms.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintaina neat, orderly, and well-documented server room with always up-to-dateinventory and appropriate stock of consumable supplies

  • Deploy and maintain a diverse data center / server room infrastructure including the physical installation of hardware

  • Forecast laboratory resource requirements and provide accurate input, as requested, into budgeting activities

  • Manage network infrastructure consisting of Ethernet and InfiniBand fabrics

  • Understandand adhere to organizational and corporate requirements / bestpractices for all aspects of facility and system security

  • Workclosely with development teams to architect and implement systems in ahighly available manner and provide feedback, based on implementationefforts

  • Collaboratewith peers and management on planning and work estimation of newinfrastructure deployment activities and manage/implement to a schedule

  • Develop and maintain scripts to automate discovery and monitoring of infrastructure

  • Standardize, automate, and document setup of development environments

  • Deliver repeatable, reliable physical and virtual systems using automation

  • Implement and maintain configuration and change management

  • Document operations

  • Implement new automation technologies to improve the speed and quality of our engineering efforts

  • Coordinateactivities with external IT organizations, facilities, and developmentorganizations to ensure delivery of seamless operations to end users

  • Troubleshootand identify the root cause of issues in a complex environment, providetimely resolution, and implement controls to guard against recurrence /regression

  • Communicateoperational status, both planned and unplanned activities, clearly andconcisely to a wide constituency consisting of architects, developers,and senior management

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • BS/MS in EE or CS is highly desired

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written

  • Ability to coordinate cross-functional work toward task completion

  • Proven experience in IT infrastructure planning and development

  • Ability to troubleshoot and debug production issues under pressure

  • Strong work ethic, attention to detail and problem solving skills

  • 5 years of network administration

  • Experience with network protocols, and standards, including, HTTP, SSL, LDAP, TCP/IP, NFS, DNS, and DHCP

  • Demonstrable cross-functional experience with Systems, Storage and Networking

  • 5years of in-depth experience with system configuration management toolssuch as Spacewalk, Salt, Puppet, Chef, Vagrant, Docker, etc.

  • Experience creating automation using Python

  • Possess solid understanding of network and systems security

  • Strong Python coding and scripting skills

  • Strong Bash and other shell scripting skills

  • Fluency with source code management systems such as Git, SVN, and Mercurial

  • Extensive experience with Linux and Unix platforms including RedHat, CentOS, Oracle Linux, and Debian-based distributions

  • Experience deploying, extending, and using network management and monitoring tools such as Nagios, Cacti, and Observium

  • Experience designing, deploying, and managing large scale and high performance Ethernet fabrics

  • Experience deploying and managing Data Center Infrastructure Management equipment (console servers, intelligent PDUs, etc.)

  • Fundamentalunderstanding of server room / data center ancillary equipment(structured cabling, racks and cabinets, out-of-band management systems,etc.)

  • Oracle DBA experience (Clusterware, RAC, and standalone)

  • Experience with virtualization software, in particular, Oracle VM and Xen

  • Experience designing and deploying systems using OpenStack or other cloud management platform experience

  • Ability to build, administer, monitor and tune Linux application (LAMP) servers

  • Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control and Ops Center experience

  • Experience designing and supporting highly available and highly scalable infrastructure

  • Experience deploying and managing HPC systems

  • Experience administering and troubleshooting InfiniBand fabrics

  • Ability to troubleshoot and debug infrastructure issues under pressure

  • Familiaritywith Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment best practicesand technologies (Jenkins, Hudson, Artifactory, etc.)

As a member of the IT organization, assist with the analyze of existing complex programs and formulate logic for new complex internal systems. Prepare flowcharting, perform coding, and test/debug programs. Develop conversion and system implementation plans. Recommend changes to development, maintenance, and system standards.

Job duties are varied and complex utilizing independent judgment. May have project lead role. BS or equivalent experience in programming on enterprise or department servers or systems.
