Provide journey-level welding support for campus facility renovation and repair projects, including repair of campus vehicles and equipment. Provide diverse support to campus special events.

Essential Functions

Layout and fabricate metal products in support of campus facility renovation-repair projects and client special equipment requirements. Repair campus vehicles and equipment using in-shop or portable equipment. Operate standard shop equipment of the trade, including hydraulic shear, band saw, drill press, plasma cutter, and related hand tools. Assist other shop trades personnel with project-related duties, including asphalt repair; concrete construction or repair; masonry; interior demolition in support of facility renovations; installation and removal of scaffolding; pressure washing and sandblasting exterior surfaces; and relocation of client heavy equipment. Provide support to campus special events, including delivery and setup of banners, flags, and production equipment. Read, understand, and work from drawings, specifications, standards, and written-verbal instructions, as applicable, with or without direct supervision. Inspect completed work for compliance with construction documents, and regulatory building and safety codes. Assist in shop operations. Maintain and properly secure shop, tools, equipment, and vehicles. Maintain a clean and safe work environment in shop and at job sites. Comply with safety standards and policies. Accomplish basic shop paperwork and electronic documents, including records for materials used, daily labor report, and weekly timesheets. Drive UT vehicle in support of campus projects and special events.

Marginal/Incidental functions

Attend management-directed meetings and training. Accomplish other duties as assigned.

Licenses: Class "C" Operator's Driver's License. Applicant selected must provide a current three year Driving Record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, must obtain a Texas Driver's License within 30 days after entering Texas as a new resident.

Required qualifications

High school graduation or GED. Three years of experience in journey-level welding. Before final offer can be made, successful applicant must provide a current driver's license and acceptable driving record for the most recent 36 months. Texas driving history will be confirmed online during selection process; applicant must provide out-of-state driving history, if previously licensed in another state. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Associates degree or graduation from vocational or technical training related to welding or facility renovation-construction. Five years journey-level experience in commercial or industrial welding with emphasis on arc, MIG, and gas operations. Demonstrated experience with selection of materials, layout, cutting, and fabrication of metal products from project drawings, specifications, construction standards, and written or verbal instructions with or without direct supervision. Experience working with steel, expanded metal, and aluminum. Experience with other shop trades, including concrete and asphalt repair, heavy equipment operation, or masonry. Basic computer skills, including word processing, email, and Internet. Commitment to and compliance with organizational values, goals, policies, and rules regarding customer service, job performance, and job-related safety. Experience working in a university or other large physical plant environment. Ability to perform in a team environment and promote teamwork among coworkers, supervisors, and clients.

A criminal history background check will be required for finalist(s) under consideration for this position.

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
