The Control Systems Specialist (CSS) provides the day to day software and hardware support for the facilities process control systems so it continues to meet the specifications of system design and standards and assists with commissioning of new and/or upgraded control equipment.

Roles & Responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • DCS/PLC Software - SME for all Control Systems software

  • Design and implement DCS/PLC software changes on control systems. Examples include structured text, PLC ladder logic, DCS logic configurations, point building and graphic design

  • Assign and maintain control system addressing and point assignments

  • Technical consultant to contract engineering firms and project engineers on modifications to the control systems and plant process field equipment. Coordinates the FAT (factory acceptance test) and/or the SAT (site acceptance test)

  • Maintain instrument index and provide tag assignments for new loops

  • SIS /IPL/ESS - Assist in the design and implementation of Instrumented Protective Systems for DCS Interface

  • Assist in in the software and hardware troubleshooting of control system issues

  • Provide on call assistance for Control Systems issues 24/7

  • Assist Instrument and Electrical Technicians in troubleshooting of control system issues

  • Markup drawings affected by configuration changes

  • Provide operations with information to update SOP’s and/or daily operating instructions due to configuration changes

  • Support the IEC Engineer in the coordination of the checkout and startup of field devices to the control systems. Oversee both contractor and CPC personnel to ensure there are no conflicts or duplications in work effort. Provides the engineering group with drawing markups and progress reports

  • Perform application-engineering studies on the plant process to determine changes or additions required to improve product quality and smooth operations

  • Provide technical expertise to solve process control and field instrumentation problems

  • Stay abreast of future developments and new features on plant control systems by attending Users Group seminars, vendor schools, and demonstrations

  • Develop and be responsible for a lifecycle plan for all control systems

  • Conduct informal training sessions for other disciplines affected by control systems

  • Support the development of internal guidelines on standardizing control system design

  • Annual review of Hardware/Software Maintenance Contracts

  • Support controls construction projects: Includes:

  • Participate in project scope meetings to discuss control strategies required to accomplish project goals

  • Perform/coordinate software and hardware upgrades on the control systems

  • Perform Quality Assurance (loop Sales) of newly installed control systems loops. Includes:

  • Validating the I/O, controllers, graphics, and alarms are installed and configuration per design package

  • Perform Factory Acceptance Tests of new control systems

  • Support PHA/LOPA Review Teams as needed

  • Work closely with the IT/ICS group on cyber security initiatives and adhere to EHS 10.70 ICS Network Security Policy

  • Work closely with the process control engineers and control system analyst on APC initiatives

  • Work closely with the plant Alarm Management Coordinator and adhere to EHS 12.02 Alarm Management Procedure

  • Participate in the AOA process and implement new and changed alarms in the DCS as required


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering/Chemical Engineering or Associate’s Degree in Instrument or Electrical/Electronic Technology with a minimum of 3 years’ related experience.

  • Experience designing and implementing software and hardware changes on control systems.

  • Proficient in reading and understanding design documents such as P&IDs, instrument loop drawings, schematics, etc.

  • Self-motivated, able to lead and influence others, manage multiple tasks simultaneously, and demonstrate a professional attitude.

  • ABB, Yokogawa and/or Foxboro DCS experience is considered a plus.
