WHO MAY BE CONSIDERED: Students eligible for the Pathway Internship Program. These positions are being filled under the Pathway's Internship Program. This type of appointment is generally not to exceed one year and may be shortened or extended based on continued need/funds and the student's continued eligibility in the Pathways Internship Program. You must submit proof of student eligibility with your application. Veteran preference eligibles must provide proof of preference. ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: In order to be eligible for an appointment under the Pathways Internship Program: You must be a student accepted for enrollment or enrolled in a degree or certificate program on a full- or half-time basis as defined by the institution (certificate program means post-secondary education, in a qualifying educational institution, equivalent to at least one academic year of full-time study that is part of an accredited college-level, technical, trade, vocational, or business school curriculum); and Enrollment is with a qualifying educational institution such as a high school or state-approved home school; or accredited technical or vocational school; a 2 or 4 year college or university; a graduate or professional school (e.g., law school, medical school); or a post-secondary home school curriculum; and Students must be in good academic standing according to their institution. You must continue to meet these eligibility requirements throughout the duration of your appointment under the Pathways Internship Program.
POSITION INFORMATION: This is a part-time position. It is anticipated that the student will work between 20 and 32 hours per week year round. The hours can be adjusted based on the needs of the park and the needs of the student to attend school. This position will require weekend work and occasional evenings to work special events.
Incumbent will provide interpretive programs, informational talks, and demonstrations to a variety of visitors. Incumbent will greet, educate, and provide assistance/information regarding rules, regulations, area information and safety concerns. Incumbent will assist in research and preparation of presentations. Incumbent will be required to use computer and a variety of software programs. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work ranges from moderately sedentary to moderately strenuous. Duties involve standing for prolonged periods, walking and occasional lifting of supplies. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed indoors at the visitor center as well as in outdoor areas resulting in exposure to extreme temperatures, rain, snow, wind and direct sunlight. AREA INFORMATION/HOUSING INFORMATION: Palo Alto Battlefield National Historical Park is located in Brownsville, Texas, a city of over 100,000 people. Brownsville has all modern facilities. Housing is moderately priced and plentiful. However, rental property is limited, especially during the winter season. Located about 20 miles from the Gulf of Mexico and South Padre Island, Brownsville has a maritime weather pattern. Rain fall averages about 17" a year. Summer temperatures are hot and humid while winter temperatures are usually moderate, although infrequent, freezes do occur. Brownsville possesses a bi-cultural environment with the majority of the inhabitants speaking both English and Spanish. There is no government housing. Matamoros, Mexico, is adjacent to Brownsville. All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement, Thursday, October 27, 2016 Qualifying experience may be obtained in the private or public sectors. To be eligible for this position, you must possess the qualifying specialized experience and/or education as described in the occupational/assessment questionnaire and as outlined below. GS-3 - GENERAL EXPERIENCE: Six (6) months of General Experience. General experience is any type of work that demonstrates the ability to perform the work of the position. Examples of general experience include: disseminating information, giving basic tours, greeting visitors, providing directions, or other work which requires dealing with people on a recurring basis. GS-3 - EDUCATION SUBSTITUTION: One years of education above high school (30 semester hour or 45 quarter hours) which included at least 6 semester hours of directly related courses, such as in American history, science, or public speaking. GS-3 - COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: Equivalent combination of education and experience. For example, 3 months of general (50% of the experience requirements for this position and grade level) combined with six months of education as outlined above (50% of the education required to qualify), which included at least 3 semester hours of related courses such as American history, science or public speaking (50% of the directly-related courses required). IMPORTANT - PLEASE NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts showing your name, a list of college courses taken that identifies for each course the college or university, semester or quarter hours earned, course level, grade received, and date completed. If you are qualifying based on education and you do not submit specific course work information as described previously, your application will be rated not qualified for consideration. (A copy of your official transcripts will be required before entrance on duty, if selected).
EDUCATION: All Pathways program requirements must be met and maintained throughout student participation. To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking or other equivalent documentation. - National Park Service (NPS) uniformed position. Employee will be required to wear a uniform and comply with NPS uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided to defray the cost of the uniform.
- Applicants must possess a valid state drivers license. This position requires that you operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. A valid state drivers license is required.

Effective January 2015, employees on temporary appointments may be eligible for health benefits through the Federal Employees Health Benefits program and, if eligible, will receive the same government contribution as full-time permanent employees. To be eligible for consideration, temporary employees working full-time or part-time must be on appointments expected to last at least 90 days, or be on an intermittent work schedule and expected to work 130 hours per month for at least 90 days. Employees electing to participate in the FEHB will be responsible for the employee share of the premium while on the official agency roles, which is deducted from bi-weekly earnings. After separating from federal employment, employees will be offered to continue participation in FEHB under the Temporary Continuation of Coverage (TCC) option. Employees electing to continue coverage under the TCC provision will be responsible for the full premium amount plus a 2% administration fee.
