Radiation Therapist II

Responsible for administering radiation therapy treatments according to the prescription and instructions of the Radiation Oncologist and under the direction of the Medical Physics, Dosimetrist, and/or Cancer Center Manager. Cares for patients from adult and geriatric age groups.


Maintains work area in a clean and orderly condition and ensures that it is properly supplied for procedures

Checks equipment and accessories to ensure proper working order and notifies appropriate personnel for repairs

Responds to inquiries/ calls regarding procedures in a timely manner

Communicates problems on shift with equipment or pending exams with appropriate staff

Participates in a learning experience with new employees and students

Assists with scheduling and coordinating patients as appropriate to ensure smooth workflow

Performs quality control on assigned equipment

Attends departmental and facility meetings, chart rounds, and required courses/ modules in a timely manner

Performs pertinent duties in the best interest of patients, personnel, and the facility as assigned

As appropriate, may assume supervisory responsibilities in the absence of the designated supervisor

Executes a planned course of radiation therapy according to physicians orders

Uses all prescribed equipment and accessories for radiation therapy appropriately 100% of the time

Verifies the mathematical accuracy of the prescription and is able to recognize computation errors consistently

Documents details of administered patient treatments and daily charges accurately

Observes clinical progress of a patient undergoing radiation therapy and notifies the Radiation Oncologist immediately at the first sign of any complication

Maintains awareness of and practices established radiation safety standards in carrying out duties

Consistently wears personal monitoring device and submits it promptly and regularly for assessment of occupational dosage

Reports any loss, damage or unusual events associated with personal monitoring device immediately to the Radiation Safety Office

Fulfills continuing education and/or certification requirements to maintain required qualifications

Performs other appropriate duties as required in a competent, professional and courteous manner

Patient Interaction:

Verifies the patient's identification using two forms of ID as outlined in hospital policies using AIDET

Clearly and effectively explains the treatment procedures in a professional manner

Assists patient in dressing for exam and attends to patient's physical well-being while escorting to and from treatment area

Instructs/communicates with patient and/or patient's family (as appropriate) regarding the procedure/treatment to be performed and assesses the patient's ability to tolerate exam

Must demonstrate and maintain current knowledge, continued education and skills to provide appropriate care for the following age groups (specific to department): adult and geriatric

Performs high quality procedures examination according to exam protocol in a timely manner

Exam Performance:

Verifies the treatment dose, fields, and frequency chart for physician's notes, precautions, and patient consent forms

Administers radiation therapy according to exam protocol in a timely manner

Performs simulation and portal films according to procedure

Ensures that treatment records are properly completed with patient identification data and appropriate labeling

Utilizes technical knowledge and skills to perform procedures accurately and in a timely manner in accordance with age specific criteria

Completes charges and treatment documentation in electronic medical record

Job Performance Will Include:

Works with supervisor/manager/director on work schedules to ensure adequate coverage

Participates in the modality specific QA/QC program and ensures compliance with regulations

A working knowledge of procedural coding and billing

Monitors students in all areas of current competencies

Assists in the orientation and training of staff

Leads the work of therapist ensuring that procedures are performed according to standards

Works with supervisor/ manager/ director on work schedules to ensure adequate coverage

Participates in the modality specific QA/QC program and ensures compliance with regulations
