Position Summary Information

Job Summary

The Regional Advisor I, under general supervision, develops and implements admission, financial aid, and early outreach strategies that enhance the identification, recruitment and enrollment of prospective students interested in attending Texas A&M.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelors degree or equivalent combination of education and experience. No experience required.

Preferred Education and Experience

Masters degree. Working experience with youth and ethnically diverse populations. Experience in working with students preferably in the areas of admissions, financial aid, or recruitment. Bilingual (Spanish). One year of experience in student services or related field.

Required Licenses, Certifications, or Registrations

Must have a State of Texas Class “C” vehicle operator’s license or ability to obtain one within 30 days of employment.

Excellent interpersonal skills, oral and written communication. Organization skills. Ability to operate a computer. Working knowledge of standard office equipment and computers. Excellent oral and written communication skills with individuals and in a group setting. Ability to work well with students and parents. Ability to work well with a diverse student population. Ability use word processing and spreadsheet programs. Knowledge of financial aid programs and federal regulations relating to student financial aid. Ability to work as a team member in a dynamic organization, possessing a positive attitude and is customer- service oriented. Must be literate in the English language and able to comprehend and follow both written and verbal instructions. Ability to perform accurately in a detail-oriented environment with good interpersonal communication skills. Ability to organize and make decisions. Ability to work well under pressure in a team environment. Must be self-motivated with the ability to coordinate and attend meetings and conferences at times beyond usual working hours. Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

Knowledge of Microsoft Office products. Ability to speak Spanish and English. Ability to develop and make presentations.

THIS POSITION IS LOCATED IN MCALLEN, TX. Extensive travel required. Evenings and weekend work required. Capable of lifting heavy weight boxes, drive an automobile and travel independently.

Performs other duties as assigned or directed.

Duties Performed

Identifies, recruits, and contributes to increasing the population of admitted and enrolled under represented students in designated high schools and regions. Works directly with prospective students and parents through the entire admissions, scholarship, and financial aid application process; follow-up on specific questions; troubleshoot any issues. Coordinates with high school counselors to facilitate the admissions, financial aid, and scholarship application process; implements recruitment activities such as campus trips, presentations, resource tables, application workshops and designated area projects. Organizes, implements, and reports on programs/projects including marketing, accommodations, itineraries, meals, speakers and records.

Duties Performed

Uses professional judgment in advising and assisting students in solving their financial problems through scholarships, loans, grants, employment and financial counseling; uses professional judgment in assisting to provide budgeting, money management, loans and indebtedness counseling to students on an individual and group basis and makes presentations to groups regarding financial aid and scholarship programs. Works with the Financial Aid Office with regard to awarding and adjusting financial aid awards as necessary to conform to federal, state and institutional policies and regulations.

Duties Performed

Interacts with high school faculty, administration and staff to provide and exchange information and to enhance the counseling and advisement of students considering/planning on attending Texas A&M. Develops, implements, and manages recruitment and financial aid early awareness programs for Service assigned areas. Conducts presentations and works at resource tables as requested. Establishes community contacts in select areas in market or region. Develops working relationships with University agencies, departments, counselors and advisors to enhance customer service and satisfaction.

Develops a working knowledge of University information, opportunities and policies. Maintains knowledge of current federal, state and institutional policies, procedures and regulations pertaining to financial aid and admissions. Attends local and state workshops and conferences; may serve on university, divisional and departmental committees.
