The Lonestar Education And Research Network (LEARN) is a consortium of 39 organizations throughout Texas that includes public and private institutions of higher education, community colleges, the National Weather Service, and K-12 public schools. The consortium, organized as a 501©3, connects these organizations, and over 630+ affiliated organizations, together with high performance optical network services to support their research, education, healthcare and public service missions. LEARN provides Layer 1 and MPLS transport services. It also provides IP connectivity to a global research network through Internet2 and other networks, and commercial Internet services (CIS) to its members. Position Location: This position requires the candidate to currently operate from a home office in a virtual office environment. Travel Requirements: Travel to LEARN POPs and member locations throughout the Central, North and Southeast regions of Texas regularly and throughout the state of Texas occasionally.
Minimum Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree with three to five years of experience in related field.
Preferred Education and Experience
BS degree with minimum of 3 years of experience working directly with large system or network environments OR 6 years of professional experience with advance service provider network environment.
Demonstrated team building abilities
Proven communication skills in business environment
Proven experience with WAN router and switch configurations utilizing IPv4, IPv6, OSPF, L2 and L3 VPN protocols and technologies
A working knowledge of networking protocols, with a thorough understanding of TCP/IP, IPv4/v6 address management, and DNS
Proven experience with network management and monitoring systems (ex: PerfSonar, OpenNMS, Rancid, MySQL, RTG, RRD, netflow, Arbor Peakflow, etc.)
Linux and BSD system administration skills
Database design and management skills
Proficient with computer coding e.g. Java, PHP, Perl, Python, C++
Hands on experience with virtualization technologies e.g. VMware
Project development and network documentation experience
Knowledge of Layer2/3 protocols and technologies, e.g. 802.1q, BGP, MPLS
Juniper or Cisco certifications
Prior experience working with R&E; networks Equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience will be considered.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Provide system administration and network support to LEARN. LEARN operates a high-speed Wide Area Network (WAN) and ISP environment consisting of circuits, multiplexers, optical switches, routers, and packet switches.
Provide project planning, implementation and successful execution of projects including technical system design, and develop detailed network and system documentation.
Isolate and diagnose root causes of hardware and software issues and act on a plan of action for timely problem resolution.
Design and implement configuration of network systems, servers, virtual machines, applications, and databases.
Design and implement advanced configuration of network management tools and systems.
Provide first and second level IP and BGP support to LEARN members. Troubleshoot physical and optical connections to routers and switches, and isolate problems with network interfaces and optics.
Interact and collaborate with vendors and contractors for product/platform evaluation, technical implementation and planning, and procuring network systems and IT services.
Develop, implement, and maintain standard operational procedures and established standards.
The individual will work in a small team environment, but will have significant interaction with network and service providers, and members ranging from K-20, higher education, University system networks, other regional and national networks, content providers, and application providers.
