VA North Texas Health Care System (VANTHCS) is the second largest and most complex VA system in the nation, comprised of the Dallas VA Medical Center, Sam Rayburn Memorial Veterans Center in Bonham, Fort Worth Outpatient Clinic and Tyler VA Primary Care Clinic. VANTHCS includes five Community-Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC) locations as well as an annex clinic located three miles from Dallas VAMC. A Fisher House is located on campus at Dallas VAMC. VANTHCS is an integrated health care system with approximately 5,000 employees and over 1,600 volunteers and clinical trainees. Through these four facilities and relationships with other agencies, VANTHCS offers health care services to approximately 500,000 veterans.
Dallas VA Medical Center is the corporate headquarters for VANTHCS and serves as the tertiary referral center. Through its partnership with the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, it also has emerged as a major teaching and medical research center. The Research Program operates $8.7 million in grants. Primary care and multi-specialty outpatient clinics are also provided, making VANTHCS the first in bed days of care, the second in unique Veterans served, and the second in outpatient visits. The Weekend Senior Social Worker is assigned to independently provide clinical support to VA North Texas Inpatient Units, Intensive Care Units, Emergency Department, and Outpatient Clinics with responsibility to provide direct services for Veteran patients and their families who present for services in these areas. The Weekend Senior Social Worker will be primarily responsible to ensure continued discharge planning occurs for Veterans whose discharge has been coordinated by the assigned, daily social worker. Initiate contact with newly admitted Veteran patients to assess/anticipate discharge needs, begin planning, document and communicate the information to the daily, assigned social worker for continued follow up upon their return. Consults and referrals are be addressed and documented in the medical record for continued follow up by the receiving social worker. The Weekend Senior Social Worker is responsible to provide a variety of services for Veterans including but not limited to psychosocial assessments, pre-discharge and admission planning, short-term solution focused therapy with individuals and families who may be in crisis, education and referral for resources and benefits, suicide risk screening/assessment, clinical reminders and post-intervention follow-up. Responsibilities will also include consultation/education to medical center staff and service providers as appropriate. This involves work with special patient populations with highly complex health and/or mental health problems. The incumbent has experience that demonstrates possession of advanced practice skills and judgment, having at least two years of specialized social work practice.
Work Schedule: THIS IS A PART-TIME PERMANENT POSITION.Saturday and Sunday, 8:00am-6:30pm.

Basic Life Support (BLS) certification by the American Heart Association will be required before an appointment can be given.
Qualifications And EvaluationQualifications
BASIC QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Citizenship: Be a citizen of the United States. (Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g this part.)
Education: Have a master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the school of social work is fully accredited.A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the master's degree in social work.Verification of the degree can be made by going to the CSWE website to verify if that social work degree meets the accreditation standards for a master of social work.
Licensure:Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS-185 series in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the advanced practice level.Current state requirements may be found on the OHRM website.
Preferred Experience: Experience must demonstrate possession of advanced practice skills and judgment, demonstrating progressively more professional competency.They may have certification or other post-master's degree training from a nationally recognized professional organization or university that includes a defined curriculum/course of study and internship, or equivalent supervised professional experience.Experience working with mental health outpatient multidisciplinary team; with clients living with mental health illness and substance use disorder; providing complex case management and psychotherapy services in a substance abuse program; with intensive outpatient program and substance abuse treatment / rehabilitation treatment program. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the professional KSAs in subparagraph below.
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
1.Advanced knowledge of and mastery of theories and modalities used in the specialized treatment of complex physical or mental illness.Ability to incorporate complex multiple causation in differential diagnosis and treatment of veteran patients, including making psychosocial and psychiatric diagnoses within approved clinical privileges or scope of practice. Ability to determine priority for services and provide specialized treatment services.
2.Advanced and expert skill in a range of specialized interventions and treatment modalities used in specialty treatment programs or with special patient populations.This includes individual, group, and/or family counseling or psychotherapy and advanced level psychosocial and/or case management interventions used in the treatment of veterans with polytraumatic injuries, spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries, visual impairment, post-traumatic stress disorder, etc.
3.Advanced knowledge and expert skill in developing and implementing methods for measuring effectiveness of social work practice and services in the specialty area, utilizing outcome evaluations to improve treatment services.Ability to coordinate the delivery of specialized psychosocial services and programs.Ability to design system changes based on empirical findings.
4.Ability to provide subject matter consultation to colleagues and students on the psychosocial treatment of patients treated in the specialty area, rendering professional opinions based on experience and expertise and role modeling effective social work practice skills.Ability to teach and mentor staff and students in the specialty area of practice and to provide supervision for licensure or for specialty certifications.
5.Ability to expand clinical knowledge in the profession, demonstrating innovation in the creation of new models of psychosocial assessment or intervention to identify and address specialized clinical needs.Ability to write policies, procedures, and/or practice guidelines pertaining to the specialty population or specialty treatment program.
