Praxair, Inc. ST Process Engineer in Deer Park, Texas

_Description_:

This position is for a Process Engineer who will support Praxair’s U.S. Gulf Coast Hydrogen facilities. The successful candidate will report to the Manager of Operations Engineering Suppport for Global HyCO Operations.

The process engineer will provide technical support with emphasis on plant improvements and process consistency. These improvements will cover both short term projects and longer term strategic initiatives. The process engineer will interface with various functional teams including Safety & Health and Environmental Services, Maintenance, Reliability, Project Engineering, Process Controls, Global HyCO Operations Center, Product Management, Business Development, Sales/Strategic Account Managers, Research &Development,Six Sigma , Pipeline, Process Safety, as well as operating teams at HyCO facilities in the US.

The Process Engineer must be willing to travel to various plant locations primarily in the US Gulf Coast as necessitated by business needs. The extent of travel may be up to 25%.



Key responsibilities will include:

  1. Perform process simulations with UniSim.

  2. Steady State Process Design

  3. Reconciliation of Plant Process Data & Equipment Performance

  4. Basic design and sizing of piping systems, heat exchangers, control valves, relief valves and process meters

  5. Troubleshoot plant issues, implement solutions, and communicate learnings.

  6. Identify opportunities for cost reduction projects and initiatives

  7. Perform front-end loading for capital projects and provide support for commissioning and startup.

  8. Serve as a project manager for small capital, less complex process improvement projects

  9. Conduct and/or participate in the following:

  10. Reformer tube wall temperature analysis

  11. Process Catalyst: Surveys, Data Analysis, Report Reviews and Replacement

  12. Plant Efficiency and Advanced Control Meetings

  13. Process Hazards Analysis using the HAZOP methodology

  14. Root Cause Analysis for incident investigations

  15. Manage a technical relationship with key supplier to the Operations organization

  16. Champion and promote a strong safety culture.

  17. Assist in the development and delivery of as-needed technical and process safety training.

  18. Support continuous improvement initiatives.

  19. Support plant startups and provide as-needed support for plant turnaround planning and execution.

  20. Participate in reviews of and maintain a working knowledge of Standard Maintenance Procedures (SMP’s), Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s), Site-specific Operating Procedures (SSOP’s), and Engineering Standards.

  21. Support reliability engineering and mechanical integrity efforts.

  22. Assist with the migration of best practices and consistency initiatives across plants, regions and business units.

  23. Provide stewardship in areas of operating procedures, operating/technical manuals, critical safety systems, management of change, pre-startup safety reviews, process hazards analysis, incident investigations, audits and assessments, alert compliance, operations training, alarm management, P&ID updates, and PHA / RCA action items.

  24. Coach and mentor junior process engineers.

  • B.S. or M.S. in Chemical Engineering

  • 5 years experience as a process engineer. Operating experience with Hydrogen, Ammonia, Methanol and Boilers is preferred. Refinery background is a plus.

  • Must have very strong technical skill-sets.

  • Demonstrated aptitiude in the identification, development and implementation of cost reduction projects.

  • Understanding elements of the Process Safety Management Standard

  • Must have a positive attitude, be willing to quickly adapt to changing situations, have strong communications skills, and a drive to build and maintain productive interpersonal relationships across the organization.

  • Must be a self-starter and have the ability to work independently as well as to lead andparticipate on cross-functional teams.

  • Must be able to manage multiple projects and initiatives , drive issues and ideas to completion, and obtain results.

  • Must be detail-oriented with an ability and desire to persevere.

  • Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.Experience with Proficy Historian, Minitab, Tableau and Sharepoint a plus.

  • Must be able and willing to travel to assigned facilities within the region, other facilities within the region, and also make occasional trips to other domestic regions and office locations. Travel outside of the region is normally not expected to exceed 25%.

  • Must be willing to carry a laptop computer and cell phone for use during non office hours.

  • Must be able and willing to adapt to a work schedule that coincides with plant operational needs. Must also be able and willing to work for extended periods of time in an operating plant under various environmental conditions.

  • Must be able and willing to perform the following field activities:

o Make confined space entries during turnarounds for equipment inspection.

o Wear a full-face respirator if/when necessary.

o Climb ladders and steps on multi-story process platforms.

o Collect process data at elevated levels on permanent and temporary structures such as scaffolds.

o Spend time outdoors at any time of the year to supervise plant activities lasting days or weeks such as catalyst handling and loading, equipment installation, etc.
