DutiesMajor Duties

The purpose of this position is to perform the enforcement of federal and state vehicular and criminal laws and applicable Department of Veteran Affairs Regulations. The duties performed involve the protection of persons and property and the orderly flow of traffic throughout the EPVAHCS grounds.

Major Duties:

  • Perform policing functions such as arresting or detaining persons or seizing contraband, property, or assets;

  • Conduct searches or inspections of persons, baggage, vehicles, or other materials;

  • Enforce protection of civil rights of individuals while on federally owned property in preservation of a peaceful environment, investigates accidents;

  • Make judgment calls regarding presence of probable cause for warrant searches;

  • Advise persons of their constitutional rights and present competent professional testimony in court;

  • Make checks of various areas to determine whether the area is secure and/or if criminal activity is occurring;

  • Perform crime prevention activities;

  • Assist during a fire or other emergencies;

  • Use a variety of equipment to record evidence and document criminal activity, such as cameras, recorders, transmitters or other such electronic devices and equipment;

  • Write investigative reports;

  • Interview and question witnesses and suspects;

Qualifications And EvaluationQualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

Specialized Experience: Applicants must have One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade (GS-05) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: work that has been performed under general supervision, and included regularly pursuing and/or apprehending persons fleeing a crime scene or attempting to resist arrest, actually subduing individuals causing disturbances, arresting violators based on eyewitness accounts, performing control desk duties, taking charge of a crime or accident scene, and conducting long- and short-range investigations.

Specialized experience may have been gained in work on a police force; through service as a military police officer; in work providing visitor protection and law enforcement in parks, forests, or other natural resource or recreational environments; in performing criminal investigative duties; or in other work that provided the required knowledge and skills.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.


  • Applicants must possess a valid, unrestricted driver's license, have a safe driving record, and demonstrate that he or she is medically qualified to operate the appropriate motor vehicle safely.

  • VA Police Officers must be able to achieve and maintain mandatory firearm qualification/certification.

  • New VA Police Officers are required to attend a 8-week course at the VA Law Enforcement Training Center in Little Rock, Arkansas within 90 days of entry on duty.

  • A character investigation may be conducted on applicants selected for employment. The purpose of such an investigation is to secure evidence of the candidate's honesty, integrity, general character, and loyalty to the U.S. Government.

  • A medical examination is required. The duties of these positions require moderate to arduous physical exertion and/or duties of a hazardous nature. The following medical requirements apply to all applicants: good near and distant vision, ability to distinguish basic colors, and ability to hear the conversational voice.

  • An Officer who is convicted of a domestic violence violation can no longer be authorized to own, be issued, purchased or otherwise have possession of a handgun under the Lautenberg Amendment (P.L. 104-208), dated September 30, 1996.
