POSITION SUMMARY: Administrative functions may include supervising other Nuclear Medicine technologists, students, laboratory assistants, and other personnel, participating in procuring of supplies and equipment, documenting laboratory operations, participating in departmental inspections conducted by various licensing, regulatory, and accrediting agencies. Participates in scheduling patient examinations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1. Provides leadership and supervision of the technical staff to provide for the production of high quality Nuclear Medicine exams. Provides leadership and supervision of non-technical staff in assigned section to provide for orderly work flow and quality performance of duties.

  1. Interviews applicants, recommends new hires, promote, and terminate employment under the guidance of the director, and in accordance with Human Resources and Corporate Policies and regulations.

  2. Initiates counseling sessions in accordance with Positive Performance guidelines. Reports and documents problems relating to staffing morale, work, methods, procedures, transfers, and recommends action in all personnel matter for those personnel assigned to him, in consultation with the Director of Imaging Services.

  3. Participates in and oversees ongoing program to provide for an organized atmosphere and pleasant appearance of the physical plant especially in those areas accessible to patients.

  4. Monitors condition, care and maintenance of sophisticated radiation detection devices. Provides for documentation of problems, response time of service organization and completion of repair. Deals directly with service organizations to ensure adequate equipment care according to established parameters.

    5. Job Specific : Nuclear Medicine Supervisor

    EDUCATION REQUIRED AND/OR PREFERRED: High School Graduate or equivalent and 2 years allied health background in an accredited Nuclear Medicine program or 2 years of college in a related field.

    LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION: Texas Department of Health certification required. ARRT REGISTRY preferred and NMTCB CERTIFICATION required.

    EXPERIENCE REQUIRED OR PREFERRED: (list required and preferred separately) Three years experience in Nuclear Medicine is preferred. Should have extensive experience with Nuclear Medicine equipment and Detectors in terms of product evaluation, troubleshooting, and quality control. Must be mature and responsible, able to use initiative and independent judgment when necessary, and capable of working without supervision within guidelines established by the Director. Self-motivation with regard to increasing one’s level of understanding and knowledge of the field is important, as is a background that will qualify one to teach Nuclear Medicine Procedures.

    SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES: The Nuclear Medicine Supervisor is a skilled person qualified by academic and clinical training to provide patient services using Nuclear Medicine procedures under the supervision of a physician responsible for the use and interpretation of diagnostic procedures. The Nuclear Medicine Supervisor may be involved with the patients of the physician in any medical setting for which the physician is responsible. The Nuclear Medicine Supervisor should have a high degree of technical aptitude with an in-depth knowledge of anatomy and physiology. An ability to improve the standard procedures when necessary is essential. The Nuclear Medicine Supervisor must be able to supervise the work activities of the backup technologist and ancillary personnel.

Knowledge of procedures should be thorough. The number of procedures known will depend on the Supervisor’s particular interests, background, and training. Nuclear Medicine technologists apply their knowledge of radiation physics and safety regulations to limit patient and personnel radiation exposure in relation to nearly every activity. A complete knowledge and understanding of the complex instrumentation used to extract the finest-quality performance form the equipment is necessary.

The ability to deviate from normal techniques when necessary and to develop new and better techniques to keep the department up to date is also the responsibility of the Supervisor, Nuclear Medicine and the Physician. Ability to motivate and supervise assigned personnel; ability to teach new personnel; ability to determine appropriate course of action when dealing with unique situations; ability to communicate verbally and in writing in an effective manner. Ability to help move patient from bed or stretchers utilizing proper body mechanics. Ability to stand for long periods of time is required. Bilingual in English/Spanish preferred.
