Texas Health Resources Clinical Lab Assistant - Part Time in Fort Worth, Texas


Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth is seeking a part time Clinical Laboratory Assistant.


Part Time; 24 hrs/wk, 1st shift

Five days per week to include rotating weekends and holidays.

0630-1500 primarily with occasional shift in hours.



High School diploma or equivalent.


Prefer: 6 months experience as a phlebotomist or completion of a one semester course in phlebotomy.


No license required.

Prefer: PBT (ASCP)


Strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to function in a fast paced environment. Strong critical thinking, problem solving and organizational skills. Proficient in basic computer skills.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

•Receives laboratory specimens verifying collection and receipt data in the LIS. Distributes to the appropriate bench.

•Matches two identifiers (Name and PIN) before labeling unbarcoded specimens.

•Recognizes inappropriate tube types, calls and documents recollect and notifies Tech as appropriate.

•Recognizes unacceptable or QNS specimens and notifies Tech for verification, calls and documents recollect.

•Recognizes unacceptable specimen labeling. Verifies with Tech and implements Statement of Responsibility paperwork as necessary.

•Communicates any outstanding issues with the next shift and coworkers.

•Communicates with hospital personnel if there is a question about orders.

•Answers the telephone providing order information and directing calls to the appropriate tech or department.

•Identifies appropriate specimens for add on tests giving the correct collect information for ordering.

•Notifies the appropriate personnel when the disaster pager alarms.

•Unusual occurrences are reported accurately and in a timely manner.

•Calls unit when specimens are received with no orders.

•Call for recollects and monitor the recollect log, call after one hour and follow up until specimen is received or test is canceled.

•Reprints labels as required.

•Keeps work areas stocked with necessary supplies.

•Performs daily temperature checks and takes appropriate action when required.

•File all completed specimens and parafilm if necessary.

•Process 24 hour urines.

•Complete other CLA duties and maintenance as assigned.

•Helps coworkers to provide timely patient care.

•Performs supply inventory and places orders as needed. Follows up on unreceived orders. Checks supplies against packing slips and notifies management when not complete.

•Computer protocol is used for receiving and entering the collect time on specimens.

•Utilizes the computer to assist in order inquiries.

•Follows procedure for recollects, orders and label prints.

•Knows and uses computer downtime procedures as needed.
