Job Summary

VA North Texas Health Care System (VANTHCS) is the second largest and most complex VA system in the nation, comprised of the Dallas VA Medical Center, Sam Rayburn Memorial Veterans Center in Bonham, Fort Worth Outpatient Clinic and Tyler VA Primary Care Clinic. VANTHCS includes five Community-Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC) locations as well as an annex clinic located three miles from Dallas VAMC. A Fisher House is located on campus at Dallas VAMC. VANTHCS is an integrated health care system with approximately 5,000 employees and over 1,600 volunteers and clinical trainees. Through these four facilities and relationships with other agencies, VANTHCS offers health care services to approximately 500,000 veterans.

Dallas VA Medical Center is the corporate headquarters for VANTHCS and serves as the tertiary referral center. Through its partnership with the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, it also has emerged as a major teaching and medical research center. The Research Program operates $8.7 million in grants. Primary care and multi-specialty outpatient clinics are also provided, making VANTHCS the first in bed days of care, the second in unique Veterans served, and the second in outpatient visits. DutiesMajor Duties

The candidate selected for this position serves as the Suicide Prevention Coordinator (SPC).The primary location of the position is at the Fort Worth Outpatient Clinic; however, the candidate selected for this position will perform duties throughout the community of the VA North Texas Health Care System service area and will provide coverage for other SPCs who are assigned to other sections of the VANTHCS service area.This position is complex and has broad range of duties associated with it.

The SPC facilitates the implementation of suicide prevention strategies at a local level through provision of intense case management, education, monitoring, and coordination activities. The SPC functions as a coordinator for care of Veterans at suicide risk and provides VA North Texas Health Care System staff, Veterans, Veterans families and/or significant others and the community, education about suicidology and prevention strategies.

Services include training all staff on suicide prevention strategies, suicide risk assessment, and suicide behavior reporting. The SPC assesses Veterans at high risk for suicide, diagnosing mental health and high risk factors related to suicide and suicide prevention, and providing treatment options.The Suicide Prevention Coordinator monitors Veterans keeping appointments and coordinates enhanced care as for Veterans experiencing suicidal ideation.In addition SPCs respond to Veteran Crisis Line contacts following-up with connecting Veterans who have called the line to obtain services needed.

Duties for this position include, but are not limited to: conducting evaluations and assessments, suicide risk assessments, psychosocial assessments, suicide risk assessments, completing safety plans and clinical reminders, providing consultation, education, case management, referrals to VA and/or community services, assessing for and completing Advance Directives, supportive counseling, crisis intervention and therapeutic evidence based counseling.The position requires working closely with law enforcement and community-based mental health providers.The candidate selected will be required to collection data and completion of reports within designated time frames.

Social Work applicants with extensive mental health experience, providing complex case management, working with clients experiencing justice involvement issues, working with persons living with suicidal ideation, crisis intervention and working with complex client needs and managing multiple deadlines, data management and possess excellent written and oral communication skills, and working with Veterans preferred.

Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm.

Basic Life Support (BLS) certification by the American Heart Association will be required before an appointment can be given.

Qualifications And EvaluationQualifications


Citizenship: Be a citizen of the United States. (Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g this part.)

Education: Have a master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the school of social work is fully accredited.A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the master's degree in social work.Verification of the degree can be made by going to the CSWE website to verify if that social work degree meets the accreditation standards for a master of social work.

Licensure:Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS-185 series in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the advanced practice level.Current state requirements may be found on the OHRM website.

Preferred Experience: Experience must demonstrate possession of advanced practice skills and judgment, demonstrating progressively more professional competency.They may have certification or other post-master's degree training from a nationally recognized professional organization or university that includes a defined curriculum/course of study and internship, or equivalent supervised professional experience.Social Work applicants with extensive experience in mental health practice, complex case work, working collaboratively with multi-organizations providing services to persons living with homelessness or about to become homeless, working with multidisciplinary teams, and data collection, report development, and presentation are preferred.In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the professional KSAs in subparagraph below.

Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

1.Advanced knowledge of and mastery of theories and modalities used in the specialized treatment of complex physical or mental illness.Ability to incorporate complex multiple causation in differential diagnosis and treatment of veteran patients, including making psychosocial and psychiatric diagnoses within approved clinical privileges or scope of practice. Ability to determine priority for services and provide specialized treatment services.

2.Advanced and expert skill in a range of specialized interventions and treatment modalities used in specialty treatment programs or with special patient populations.This includes individual, group, and/or family counseling or psychotherapy and advanced level psychosocial and/or case management interventions used in the treatment of veterans with polytraumatic injuries, spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries, visual impairment, post-traumatic stress disorder, etc.

3.Advanced knowledge and expert skill in developing and implementing methods for measuring effectiveness of social work practice and services in the specialty area, utilizing outcome evaluations to improve treatment services.Ability to coordinate the delivery of specialized psychosocial services and programs.Ability to design system changes based on empirical findings.

4.Ability to provide subject matter consultation to colleagues and students on the psychosocial treatment of patients treated in the specialty area, rendering professional opinions based on experience and expertise and role modeling effective social work practice skills.Ability to teach and mentor staff and students in the specialty area of practice and to provide supervision for licensure or for specialty certifications.

5.Ability to expand clinical knowledge in the profession, demonstrating innovation in the creation of new models of psychosocial assessment or intervention to identify and address specialized clinical needs.Ability to write policies, procedures, and/or practice guidelines pertaining to the specialty population or specialty treatment program.
