This position is located in the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center Anesthesiology Service Line (OR area). The incumbent is responsible for providing administrative and clerical support to the Chief of Anesthesiology. The duties includes but are not limited to:

· Serves as primary timekeeper.

· Creates and updates the monthly OR call schedule for Anesthesiologists, technicians, and residents/students.

· Transmits and receives documents and messages electronically using a PC or workstation.

· Receives and reviews correspondences for correct format, punctuation, spelling, grammatical accuracy, factual correctness, enclosures, dates, signatures, etc.

·Responsible for informally orientating new staff members to the OR area.

·Administers Means Test to determine eligibility, if not currently registered.

·Inputs accurate patient data into VistA (Veterans Health Information & Technology Architecture)/CPRS (Computerized Patient Record System) computer systems.

·Performs work involving the collection, compilation and/or tracking of data and statistical information in support of an organization's program operation.

·Receives and processes documents, reports and medical records accordance with established procedures.

·Perform other related duties as assigned.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 7:00 am to 3:30 pm, some weekend or overtime may be required.

Qualifications And EvaluationQualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

Specialized Experience:

Applicants must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade (GS-05) in the Federal Service. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to:

  • Specialized Clerical or administrative experience (at the appropriate level)

  • Performing administrative support duties, such as: entering, collecting, and compiling administrative and clinical data

  • Tracking workload and progress toward goals, objectives and measures

  • Preparing correspondence, reports, and other documents

  • Coordinating meetings and conferences

  • Taking meeting minutes and assisting with patient scheduling

There is no educational substitution for the GS-06 level.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Physical Requirements: The work is generally sedentary. However, work may sometimes include walking, standing, bending and lifting or carrying of items weighing less than 15 pounds.

Time-in-grade: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements. For a GS-06 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-05 level.

  3. Skill in operating a personal computer, including skill in using software packages such as Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, knowledge of the function keys required to execute basic office automation functions and skill in using computer-related equipment.

  4. Knowledge of computerized information systems in order to access, analyze, and compose data to include VISTA, DHCP, CPRS, TMS, word processing, spreadsheets, and various other data/information retrieval systems or methods.

  5. Ability to facilitate the achievement of objectives as member of a team or group. Specific skill and/or experience in carrying out tasks without formal authority in order to achieve objectives within a section or unit.
