This full-time, permanent position is located at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center in Houston, Texas, in the Facilities Management Service Line (Electronics Shop). The incumbent is responsible for installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, repairing, and calibrating electronic controls and indicating and recording systems related to a 12 Megawatt Combined Heat and Power Plant and its associated equipment and other building control systems. Specific duties include, but are not limited to:
-Acts as a technical specialist/consultant regarding electronic and pneumatic controls
-Interprets engineering data of high voltage power generation multi-fuel plants with numerous remote units/subunits and thousands of interlocking signals
-Troubleshoots highly-complex systems of electronic sensing and control related to Combined Heat and Power (CHP) generator control systems and associated hot water generation systems
-Troubleshoots a Metasys Extended Architecture operating system controlling the facility's energy management system and main chiller plant operation by direct digital controls and line code programming
-Operates, maintains, and modifies highly-complex, computerized central environmental monitoring and control systems
-Optimizes power generation, load calculation, hot water generation, efficiency, and energy savings while maintaining environmental functions
-Uses programming skills (BASIC and C++) to analyze, edit, and test proprietary programming language for multiple systems
-Judges the impact of repairs/changes/adjustments on generator/utility interface and related integral devices
-Provides on-the-job training to plant employees and Utility Systems Operators related to Building Automated System controls functions and works with other staff to accomplish Preventive Maintenance Inspections

PHYSICAL EFFORT/REQUIREMENTS: Regular duties require work in cramped, hot, humid, and otherwise unpleasant surroundings. Work is done from ladders and scaffolding, as well as in crawl spaces and mechanical equipment rooms. It requires frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, crawling, kneeling, climbing, and lifting and carrying of items weighing up to 50 pounds.
WORKING CONDITIONS: There is frequent exposure to the possibility of burns, scrapes, and cuts. Exposure often requires the wearing of personal protective equipment like gloves, face shields, hard hats, glasses, welding hoods, and leathers. The work area is often loud, dirty, dusty, and greasy.
