Position Information
Position Summary

The Managing Director for Measurement will advise and consult on performance management and outcomes-based measurement in the Doerr Institute for New Leaders. With key stakeholders, the Managing Director for Measurement will prioritize major programmatic components of the Institute and direct evaluative efforts of these components.

The primary responsibility is to integrate metrics into all Doerr Institute initiatives (Direct Development, Peer Coaching, CoachRice, Leader Development Navigator, etc.). This position will lead a metrics team of graduate students on data collection plans, identification and development of instruments and data protocols, advise on development of data capture system, and work with them to identify where their own individual research interests align with evaluation questions.

Organization development, industrial organizational psychology, organizational psychology, or related discipline.

Work experience with at least three years of experience at coaching leaders in private, public, or social sectors.

Skills Required
  • Strong leadership and organizational skills; attention to detail; ability to efficiently implement a leadership development program in a residential college environment.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with the Doerr Institute team in the evaluation process.

  • Ability to develop the evaluation process and content based on a personal understanding of the strategic goals of the Doerr Institute for New Leaders.

  • Strong background in outcomes evaluation, survey design, implementation, and reporting.

  • Experience with Return on Investment (ROI) measurement and evaluation analysis

  • Ability to work effectively in an academic environment with a student population (in depth understanding of Internal Review Boards, etc.).

  • Appreciation for the ICF ethical standards and core competencies and how these impact survey protocol.

  • Strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills, to include the ability to maintain an effective working relationship with diverse stakeholders in the academic community and business/private sector.

  • Ability to supervise others, as demonstrated through previous successful supervisory experience and/or successful experience leading project teams.

  • Ability to motivate and support others to work independently.

Skills Preferred
  • Ability to develop educational programming.

  • Comfort with desktop computing and proficiency with word processing and spreadsheet use.

EXTERNAL: Local, state, and national civic and business leaders, advisory board members, industry partners, foundations, individual donors, alumni, leader development professionals and faculty from other schools.

Description of Job Duty
  • Lead the development, implementation, and evaluation of coaching programs and administrative processes.

  • Confirm Evaluation Questions at institutional, operational, and student levels, and develop Evaluation Framework with goals, measurable objectives, and metrics to assess both process (e.g., program implementation including coaching process) and outcome (e.g., student learning outcomes, and “goodness-of-fit of coach and student).

  • Advise Institute on analysis and reporting at key points.

  • Continually add programmatic components for evaluation and expansion of data collection plan.

  • Manage interface between data capture and implementation.

  • Continually advise metrics team and Institute on modification to or development of new instruments and protocols.

  • Collaborate with the Office of Institutional Effectiveness to measure leadership for purposes of accreditation. Provide measures to maintain ICF approval for CoachRice.

  • Facilitate workshops and meetings as appropriate.

  • Actively participate in Rice faculty meetings, training sessions, and professional group meetings related to leader coaching; stay abreast of new trends and innovations in the fields of leader coaching and pedagogy.

  • Bring together other stakeholders in the university with outside entities (such as other universities, industry, and funding agencies) to promote joint interests.

Description of Job Duty
  • Develop and administer the annual program budget for the measurement program; forecast additional funds needed for programs, staffing, equipment, materials and supplies; monitor and approve expenditures; make adjustments as necessary.

  • Contribute to the development, implementation, and assessment of the Doerr Institute for New Leaders’ strategic plan.

  • Have responsibility for measurement staff hiring, supervision, and development.

  • Direct, coordinate, and review the work plan for measurement staff; meet with staff to identify and resolve problems; assign work activities, projects, and programs; monitor work flow; review and evaluate work products, methods and procedures.

  • Create a standard set of reporting templates. Regularly, and at a minimum monthly, disseminate reports to institute Director and key stakeholders in a standardized format.

  • Prepare, develop, and implement coaching program monthly and annual reports, surveys, and program-descriptive information.

  • Keep the Director of the Doerr Institute for New Leaders informed of important measurement developments on a timely basis.

  • Respond to and resolve difficult and sensitive inquiries and complaints.

  • Maintain positive, collaborative working relationships with members of Rice.

  • Other duties as assigned.
