A Nursing Assistant at the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center willbe responsible to provide nursing care to veterans in Rehabilitation & Extended Care Line.The incumbent is responsible for performing more complex personal patient care duties, supporting diagnostic procedures, technical nursing treatments, patient charting, and patient instructions which involve direct work relationships with patients and participation as a member of the nursing care team in direct services to patients. Uses initiative to carry out recurring assignments and in prioritizing assigned duties based on patient condition and previous instructions, obtains additional instructions for any unusual or unfamiliar situations where appropriate guidelines are not readily available. The Nursing Assistant is responsible to and directly supervised by a professional Nurse (LVN/RN). Duties may include but are not limited to the following:
·Perform a range of diagnostic support duties, preparing patients for tests, exams and treatments.
·Observe and reports signs of skin breakdown to RN/LVN.
·Maintains client/patient privacy.
·Suctioning naso/oral cavity.
·Colostomy wound skin care and application of appliance.
·Collect patient data.
·Assist/completes clerical and transport functions as assigned.
·Adhere to VA and Nursing policies, procedures and standards.
·Deliver care and services to patients in a respectful, courteous, compassionate, and non-judgmental manner.
· Accurately reports patient information.
·Complies with Medical Center standards, policies and procedures.
·Utilize equipment in a safe manner.
·Report unsafe equipment and working conditions to appropriate individual.
·Employ proper lifting/moving, transfer, and assistance devices and demonstrates safe and proper body mechanics.
·Complete mandatory safety, equipment and other annual reviews, as directed and timely.
·Demonstrate and maintains competency as defined by unit and department criteria.
Work Schedule: Day, Evening, Night 8 hour tours and some 12 hour tours are available all tours are subject to rotation.
Days: 7:30am - 4:00pm & 7:30am -8:00pm
Evenings: 3:30pm - Midnight
Nights: Midnight - 8:00am & 7:30pm - 8:00am

Qualifications And EvaluationQualifications

·English Language Proficiency: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position; in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, part II, chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3j.
·Education or Training: One year above high school with courses related to the Nursing Assistant (NA) occupation. Completion of an intensive, specialized, occupation-related course of study of less than one year which resulted in attaining certification as a nursing assistant may also meet in full the experience requirements for GS-3.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social).Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
·GS-3: Experience, Education-None beyond the basic requirements.
1.Experience. One year of specialized experience as a NA or experience in another medical field,OR
2.Education. Successful completion of 2 years above high school in an accredited institution with courses related to nursing care, health care or in a field of studyAND
3.Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs). In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
a)Ability to provide a range of patient/resident care and contribute to the completion of the nurse care plan and recovery of patients/residents.
b)Ability to observe patients/residents' or resident's physical or emotional status and refer deviations and/or problems to supervisor in a timely manner.
c)Ability to properly use equipment, materials and supplies in simple diagnostic and treatment procedures such as bladder scan, continuous passive motion device, blood glucose monitoring machine, specimen collection, etc.
d) Ability to communicate effectively with patients/residents, their families and other health professionals.
·GS-5 NA (Full Performance Level)
1.Experience. One year of progressively responsible assignments and experience equivalent to the GS-4 level, which demonstrates knowledge, skills, and abilities that are directly related to the specific assignment. OR
2.Education. Successful completion of a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree that included 24 semester hours of courses related to health care or possession of a bachelor's degree; AND
a)Ability to assist in the full range of nursing care to patients/residents with physical and/or behavioral problems in a hospital, long term care or outpatient setting under the direction of a Registered Nurse and/or Licensed Vocational Nurse/Licensed Practical Nurse.
b)Ability to communicate orally with patients/residents, families, interdisciplinary team and other personnel. This includes serving as a preceptor to new NAs by assisting with the coordination of their orientation and overseeing/assessing their practical experience while in a clinical setting.
c)Ability to recognize and react to emergent patient/resident care situations and intervene while waiting for assistance. For example, recognizing need for basic life support, controlling bleeding and assisting with behavior crisis, etc.
A year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in the appropriate activities.
