DutiesMajor Duties

This full-time, Cardiothoracic Physician Assistant positionis assigned to the Operative Care Line (OCL) at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center (MEDVAMC) in Houston, Texas, one of the most complex facilities in the VA healthcare system. MEDVAMC is interested in acquiring the employment of an experienced cardiothoracic physician assistant. The Physician Assistant (PA) is an agent of the managing physician in providing clinical care to patients in this medical center. As a medical professional, the PA is responsible for reporting his/her patient care activities in the medical record. As a physician assistant, he/she is authorized to enter clinical orders in the medical records of patients admitted to the Operative Care Line for care.

OR Duties:

  • Proficient in open and endoscopic saphenous vein harvest (Prefer at least 2 years of experience).

  • First assist or second assist in cardiac and thoracic procedures.

Out of OR Duties:

  • Clinical care of cardiothoracic patients including preoperative evaluation and work-up, perioperative and postoperative care.

  • Evaluating and managing patients in the outpatient clinic.

  • Clinical documentation, including daily progress notes, H&Ps, procedure consent, and discharge summaries.

  • Bedside procedures including wound care.

  • Work with clinical nurses, social workers, and case managers to streamline patient flow and care.

  • Patient scheduling and processing of consults.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. (No alternate work schedules are available)

Qualifications And EvaluationQualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

  • Education. The candidate must meet the following (1) Graduate of a PA training program, or of a surgical assistant program which is accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission of Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor organizations and (2) A Bachelor's degree from an accredited PA training program or in another health sciences related field from an accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

  • Certification. (1) Current and continuous certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physicians Assistants (NCCPA) is required for employment in VHA.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social).
