DeBakey VA Medical Center (MEDVAMC) and its outpatient clinics, MEDVAMC VCS employees permanently employed for at least 90 days, permanent employees of the Houston National Cemetery and Houston VBA, and permanent employees of the following organizations serviced by MEDVAMC: OI&T, Vet Center, and VISN 16 Contracting. This position is located in the Mental Health Care Line at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center in Houston, Texas. If selected for this position, you will provide general clerical as well as management assistance to the Mental Health Care Line Nurse Executive by collecting and analyzing data in order to prepare reports.
Duties and responsibilities:
Produces a variety of standardized documents such as letters and reports
Posts time and attendance reports on a daily basis for the designated nursing areas within the Mental Health Care Line
Collects, compiles, and/or tracks data and statistical information in support of the Mental Health Care Line Nurse Executive
Reviews documents and reports for completeness and enters pertinent information into an automated tracking system
Prepares, executes, and/or tracks program specific information such as congressional inquiries
Uses software applications such as Vista, Access, Excel, and Word, to draw information to prepare/assist in the preparation of reports
Assists in the planning, review, and reporting of data/statistical results of program/project studies
Performs basic analyses of data and generates a variety of reports
Maintains an automated system of program-specific data to track suspenses on items such as progress reports, compliance strategies, etc.
Provides assistance in the performance of manpower analysis, workload studies, or comparable work to meet the manpower analysis needs of the Mental Health Care Line Nurse Executive
Performs a wide variety of administrative tasks (correspondence and information control; obtaining and tracking equipment, supplies, and services; performing personnel clerk work; processing incoming and outgoing mail; receiving and directing callers and visitors; arranging records for storage, retrieval, and disposition)

Qualifications And EvaluationQualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade (GS-06) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience include, but are not limited to: performing administrative and clerical work in a medical administration office; creating and maintaining files; creating and maintaining spreadsheets; collecting, compiling, and tracking various data; typing correspondence and reports; and reviewing and distributing mail.
There is no educational substitution for the GS-07 level.
Typing Proficiency: In addition to meeting the specialized experience requirements, you must be able to type at least 40 words per minute.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Requirements: The work requires no special physical demands. It may involve some walking, standing, bending, and carrying of light items.
Time-in-grade: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements. For a GS-07 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-06 level

Competency 2 - Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with people from varied backgrounds tactfully and courtesously
Competency 3 - Ability to plan, organize, coordinate and prioritize work assignments made up of clerical practices and organizational processes. Ability to perform work assignments effectively with little or no supervision.
Competency 4 - Knowledge of computerized information systems in order to access data to include DHCP, LAN, word processing, spreadsheets, and various other data/information retrieval systems or methods. Knowledge of office equipment to include multi-line telephone and multi-work center copier.
