Position Information
Position Summary

The Research Technician I serves as technical staff to support ongoing clinical studies of optical imaging for early detection of cancer. These studies are carried out in collaboration with the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, the University of Texas Health Science Center, Baylor College of Medicine, and other clinical institutions. The Research Technician will assemble, test, and maintain optical instruments (hardware and software) for ongoing clinical studies; participate in the development of instruments and software for new clinical studies; analyze data using Matlab software; operate instruments and collect data in the clinical setting; and assist with the preparation of reports and publications. In the course of these duties the Research Technician will interact regularly with clinical personnel and with study subjects.

  • Successful candidate will be required to complete training courses in Laboratory Safety and Protecting Human Research Participants, as well as training specific to clinical sites.

  • Contact with patients participating in clinical studies.

Physical Demands

Frequent: sitting, standing, walking, bending, pushing, pulling, use of manual dexterity, extending of arms, climbing of stairs, reaching, twisting of upper body, talking, listening, reading and viewing. Frequent: walking among various clinical sites in the Texas Medical Center. Frequent: lifting, carrying, and moving biomedical instruments, up to 20 pounds.

Working Conditions

Office and laboratory environment at Rice University; clinical environment (including operating room during surgery) at clinical sites in the Texas Medical Center. Early morning hours may be required occasionally, typically one or two days per week when clinical studies are in progress (6:30 a.m. typical).
