Position Information
Position Summary

The Web and Social Media Specialist serves as the primary staff member responsible for establishing, monitoring and growing the Development and Alumni Relations division’s social media presence. A primary function of this position is to develop and post content to a variety of social media outlets, including (but not limited to) Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and LinkedIn. This involves working closely with graphic designers, writers and web staff on the Communications Team, as well as with the Office of Alumni Relations, to plan and coordinate integrated social media campaigns for signature events and engagement initiatives. It also includes gathering and monitoring metrics, identifying trends, integrating social media into a variety of website and email assets, and partnering with other university social media programs to expand and strengthen the division’s engagement efforts. Finally, the Specialist will support the division’s broadcast email and website communications using several different applications such as: Adobe, Dreamweaver, Adobe Photoshop and some HTML hand coding.

Skills Required

  • Web development skills and use of content management software.

  • Experience with broadcast e-mail.

  • Exposure to project management software.

Internal / External Contacts

INTERNAL: Extensive collaboration within the university, including that with division leaders and other campus communicators, especially in Public Affairs (but also with schools and departments).

EXTERNAL: Some contact outside the university with alumni and vendor partners will be required. Contact will be in person, in writing, by telephone, and through email and online communications.

Physical Demands
  • Must be able to move about the campus easily.

  • Must be able to lift and carry boxes up to 20 lbs. (e.g., print materials) and lift and manipulate banners and other event-related graphic supplies.

Working Conditions

The Communications department operates within the Development and Alumni Relations division. Professional and collegial office atmosphere; pace is often high-energy. This person will spend most days using a desktop computer and meeting with others on collaborative projects. Occasionally may be required to attend after-hours events on or off campus.

  • Demonstrates quantifiable results in all aspects of the social media presence to grow and engage the user base. Measures the success of social media campaigns and recommends revisions to social media strategies and plans for the future.

  • Reports and manages the varied social media venues in real time, utilizing tools such as Hootsuite, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Foursquare and Reddit, as well as new and emerging technologies, to keep the Communications team informed of trending topics and gathering metrics that concern the university.

  • Acts as an internal advocate for digital community efforts within the division and the broader university, building support for social initiatives among internal stakeholders and driving digital best practices.

  • Works closely with colleagues across Development and Alumni Relations on divisional plans, strategy and goals. This involves leading social media brainstorming and planning sessions for select projects.

  • Works as a part of the Communications team to ensure the university’s and department’s goals are met. This includes participating in weekly meetings, contributing follow up information on the status of different projects and presenting results on an ongoing basis.

  • Remains current on and shares information on emerging trends, technologies and innovative social initiatives.
