Verizon Network Engineer in Irving, Texas


Under the guidance of the Principal Engineer, this Engineer position will help lead the Network Integration efforts for new products and services developed by the Product Development and Corporate Network Planning organizations. The successful candidate will have moderate, but solid/sound, knowledge in the areas of Networking, Transport, Systems and Service design & integration. The individual is valued for sound judgment and initiative to deliver products and services that meet the high standards developed by Verizon offerings to end customers.

Planning and Product Support:

The Engineer will work with the Principal Engineers of the team, along with management, provide support to the Product Development team for new and existing products and services and their integration into end-customer networks.

  • Engage with external Verizon customers to identify the requirements best suited for the platform/service while bearing in mind their network requirements and standards such as, space, power, cabling and security requirements.

  • Work with Product SME’s to fully understand the needs of the application to optimize Network, System and Storage configurations to achieve high reliability, while keeping capacity ratings in mind.

  • Work with the end-customer’s Planning and Engineering organizations to develop strategies and tactical plans for ensuring reliable designs of Network components and services.

Network Design & Integration:

Developing reliable designs, documentation, and architecture diagrams for high-performance, highly available networked systems providing commercial services to Verizon customers. Design elements could include:

  • Defining and documenting the server physical or virtual CPU, memory, storage, operating systems, and database designs

  • Defining and documenting power and space requirements for new Network equipment (servers, load balancers, firewalls, etc.).

  • Defining and documenting the networking requirements for the system, including IPv4 and IPv6 addressing, VLANs, numbers and types of network ports and cabling.

  • Analyzing system capacity vs. forecasted demand and traffic projections, ensuring the system will be able to scale up or out to meet unexpected high demand.

  • Defining and documenting the network security, load balancing, and local/geographic redundancy elements, including firewall hardware, firewall and ACL policies, server load balancing (SLB) and global server load balancing (GSLB) methods and details.

  • Defining and documenting the data interfaces between the new system and other existing systems in the network as needed, such as DNS, REST/HTTP, IMAP, Diameter, SIP, SQL, etc.

  • Analyzing end-to-end (user-to-user or service-to-user) call flows to design for service reliability and make sure all end-customer Network impacts are accounted for.


Under the guidance of management along with the Principal Engineers on the team, the Engineer will establish and maintain positive relations with internal and external cross-functional teams, including:

  • Interface with end-customer technical SME’s to understand their networking requirements and standards in order to deliver, deploy and successfully integrate Verizon developed products and services into their network solution architecture.

  • Interface with Verizon Networking and Product Development professionals to evaluate and translate end-customer networking requirements, policy & standards for deployment of services within their native networking environment.

This position requires the translation of product and network feature/service requirements into an implementable detailed design that downstream teams will use as a guide to make changes in the end-customer’s network.

This position will be expected to function with moderate independence, needing direction only for major architectural or inter-organizational policy decisions.



  • Bachelors in Telecommunications Technology or Engineering required.

  • Masters in Telecommunications, Technology or Engineering strongly desired.

  • 5+ years of wireless / wireline industry technical experience.

  • 7+ years of wireless / wireline system integration experience preferred.

  • Ability to work independently in a loosely structured environment, engaging other technical subject matter experts as needed for input is very important.

  • Successful candidate will have some experience managing and communicating expectations to technical experts and customers, and managing the responses.

Systems Design and Integration:

  • Moderate experience designing or architecting complex networked data systems for high availability.

  • Moderate experience with multi-tiered applications (i.e., front-end, middleware, back-end or database).

  • Moderate experience with a variety of wireless technologies such as CDMA, LTE, VoIP, GSM.

  • Moderate experience incorporating virtualization technologies and techniques in such applications or architectures where applicable. Examples include: OpenStack Liberty and later, KVM hypervisors, and SR-IOV or Open vSwitch+DPDK, Container-based virtual machines.

Systems Management & Administration:

  • Systems admin experience with one or more enterprise Linux releases (preferably Red Hat Enterprise 6 or later).

  • Relational or NoSQL Database administration or integration, such as Oracle RDBMS, MongoDB, or Hadoop/HBASE. LDAP experience also good.

  • SAN, NAS and RAID Storage, experience with ceph or OpenStack Cinder volume management preferred.

  • Linux scripting, preferably Python or Perl.

  • Familiarity with W3C standards and DNS implementation strongly desirable.

  • Knowledge of load balancing technology a plus.


  • Moderate knowledge of TCP/IP networking and CIDR subnetting from the host system perspective is required.

  • Experience configuring multi-homed server systems with redundancy and failover.

  • IPv4 & IPv6 experience required.

  • Ethernet and Fiber Channel or iSCSI.

  • IP filtering and firewalls.

  • Knowledge of BGP routing a plus.

  • Policy based Security is required.
