Texas Tech University Lead Specialist in Lubbock, Texas

Position Description

Performs advanced, specialized work to assist in the organization and implementation of various projects and programs. Work is performed under minimal supervision within established policies with latitude for independent judgment. Works on special projects as assigned. May substitute for supervisor during his/her absence.

Major/Essential Functions
  1. Transcribe daily dictation of gross and microscopic specimens. Must be able to transcribe quickly and accurately.

  2. Prioritization skills essential.

  3. Proofread work to check for accuracy.

  4. Ensures patient results are received properly by clients.

  5. Enters or updates patient demographics.

  6. Verifies and updates insurance on patients.

  7. Issues medical record numbers to new patients.

  8. Assigns accession numbers to daily cases.

  9. Logs in cases for the Dermatology specimens into the Pathology Pathnet Cerner LIS system. This includes handling of patient specimens wearing proper laboratory attire, following all laboratory safety rules while assigning accession numbers.

  10. Answers the main telephone lines for the department.

  11. Provides clerical assistance to pathologists, physicians and staff. This can include making phone calls, copying, transcribing letters, handling any type of question someone might have.

  12. Scan reports from outside institutions (consultation reports/results) into the Cerner LIS. This requires using a scanner and ensuring proper attention to detail is paid so results are not put on incorrect patients.

  13. Process send outs.

Required Qualifications

High school plus six years experience in related field. Additional education may substitute for experience on a year for year basis.
