This is a Temporary Position, NOT TO EXCEED 1 YEAR, Located at the Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge, Marble Falls, TX.

Serves as a skilled crewmember on an engine, helitack, or hand crew.

Performs basic fireline activities such as line construction, hose layout, operations of pumps and accessories, lopping and scattering of fuels using hand tools and holding, patrolling, monitoring, and mop-up operations.

Responsible for operation and maintenance of specialized equipment used to respond to wildland and prescribed fire situations.

Participates in wildland fire and safety training in the techniques, practices, and methods of fire suppression and in the safe, efficient operation and use of tools, equipment, and vehicles used in fireling activities, with emphasis on those used in the particular function assigned.

Perform project work such as road and trail maintenance, habit manipulation, and miscellaneous equipment and facilities maintenance.

By the closing date of this announcement, you must meet the minimum qualification requirements as outlined in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook and as identified in this announcement below.


GS-4: 6 months general experience and 6 months specialized experience OR completion of 2 years above high school with courses related to the occupation. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: Forestry aid or technician work. Engineering, range, or soil conservation technician work that involved the application of cultural, resource conservation, or land management practices on nonforest or ranch lands when combined with knowledge of forestry operations and equipment. Farming or ranching work that involved application of cultural and soil and water conservation practices, including safety and use of equipment, and that provided a basic understanding of land use. Forest or range fire control, prevention, or suppression work.

GS-5: At least 1 year specialized experience equivalent to a GS-04 in the Federal Service. Examples of specialized experience may include: participate in fire prevention, suppression, and prescribed burning; prepare fire reports; instruct and provide on-the-job; dispatch personnel, supplies and equipment; operates wildland fire; maintain records of fire time and attendance work done by fire crews OR successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with a major degree as described in OPM's Individual occupational requirements for either the 455 or 462 series OR an equivalent combination of the specialized experience and education described above.

Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 and above): In addition to the experience requirements described in the group coverage standard, seasonal experience may also be creditable. A season of experience is considered to be a period of no less than 3 months of continuous employment on a seasonal basis. Shorter periods may be combined to make a season, provided a total of at least 3 months' experience is shown. For any period where the work exceeded 3 months, the excess work is credited towards an additional season of experience. Four seasons of experience are qualifying for GS-4.

Drug Testing: Applicants selected for this position will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment. In addition, this position is a drug testing designated position subject to random drug testing for illegal drug use.

Firefighter position requirements: This position is approved as a primary firefighter position for coverage under the special CSRS and FERS retirement provisions of 5 USC8336(c) and 5 USC 8412 (d).

Applicants must continuously meet the requirements for a National Interagency Fire Qualification System (NIFQS) rating of Firefighter.

Medical Requirements: Applicants selected for this position must meet the Federal Interagency Wildland Firefighter Medical Qualification Standards for arduous duty wildland firefighting and will be required to pass the pre-employment medical exam.

Applicants must maintain the prerequisite physical stamina and strength needed to perform rigorous duties and must pass the Work Capacity Test at the arduous level annually.

The Incumbents will be required to obtain and wear an official U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service uniform.

Incumbent must be able to operate a government-owned or leased motor vehicle. A valid state driver's license is required.

*Physical Demands: *Duties involve rigorous fieldwork requiring above average physical performance, endurance and superior conditioning. Work will require prolonged standing, walking over uneven ground, and recurring bending, reaching, lifting and carrying of items weighing over 50 pounds. Incumbent is subject to medical examination and must pass the work capacity test for arduous positions.

*Work Environment: *Work is primarily performed in forest and desert environments in steep terrain where surfaces may be extremely uneven, rocky, covered with thick tangled vegetation, smoky conditions, etc. Temperatures commonly exceed 100 degrees F. Incumbent may be required to live in backcountry camps for extended periods of time.
