Scope of Job
The Department of Psychological Science at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) invites applications for a tenured/tenure-track position (open rank) in the area of experimental psychology, broadly defined. We are seeking candidates with a PhD in Social, Cognitive, Developmental, Applied Behavior Analysis, or Physiological psychology who demonstrate the ability to maintain an active program of research, seek extramural research funding, teach undergraduate and graduate courses in the candidate’s area of expertise, and mentor graduate students in the department’s MA program. Preference will be given to candidates with administrative experience and interest in serving as Associate Chair in the department. UTRGV, a Hispanic serving institution, opened its doors in Fall 2015. UTRGV was created by the Texas Legislature in 2013 and brought together the assets and resources of UT Pan American and UT Brownsville. UTRGV is also home to a new School of Medicine that opened in 2016. UTRGV is in the middle of one of the fastest growing areas in the nation, the southern tip of Texas known as the Rio Grande Valley.
UTRGV has a 5-year NSF ADVANCE Institutional Transformation grant to increase the representation of women in the faculty and leadership of STEM fields (which includes psychology) and to promote a positive, family friendly work environment. The Department of Psychological Science is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity (broadly defined) and excellence of the academic community through their research, teaching and/or service.

Assistant Professor: Applicants must have an earned doctorate in psychology from an accredited university by September 1, 2017. Applicants must present evidence of active experimental psychology research that includes publications in peer-reviewed journals, and must present evidence of potential to effectively teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels, potential to supervise research activities of students, potential to maintain active programmatic research, and potential to obtain external grant funding. Associate Professor: Beyond the above requirements, requirements include a demonstrated ability to independently conduct programmatic research activities that meet the departmental and institutional requirements for the rank of associate professor; and (2) a high degree of teaching proficiency and commitment to professional service. Professor: Beyond the above requirements, requirements include scholarly professional experience demonstrated through an exemplary record of publications in peer-reviewed journals, external funding, and a distinguished record of accomplishments that have led to a national reputation in the applicant’s area of expertise. Applicant’s professional activities should meet the departmental and institutional requirements for the rank of professor.

UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code §51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
