Associate’s degree with a current Texas Registered Nurse license and three (3) years nursing experience in the designated study area.
This position provides advanced professional nursing skills in a unit, clinic, or hospital involving patient related research efforts.

Bilingual, ability to read, write, and speak Spanish.

Distributes research information to faculty, research staff, and principal investigators. Schedules follow-up visits and maintains contact with patients, patients’ families, department staff, and other faculty members on the team. Maintains inventory of investigational drugs. Provides training and guidance to research nurses and other research personnel.

Performs professional nursing duties in connection with clinical research which requires experience and/or additional training such as coordinating clinical research data, performing of a number of physiologic and laboratory determinations on patients, calculating derived information, maintaining research protocol, taking medical histories and giving physical examinations, collecting blood,collecting data from patients’ charts for retrospective review studies. Screens patients for protocol eligibility and participation in clinical trials by ensuring all necessary documentation is collected and processed along with consent. Participates in the coordination and monitoring of patient treatment in clinical trials. Provides background and education to participants regarding the research project. Instructs and counsels participants in research procedures, administers treatment procedures, monitors participants during procedures and records and analyzes data. Prepares and sterilizes instruments. Monitors patient’s compliance with study medication. Answers patient’s questions and reinforces physician’s orders according to protocol.

Inputs data and maintains research databases and related records needed for research. May assist the physician in protocol analysis using computer statistical/data management packages. Reviews goals and requirements of any new protocols: plans and designs source documentation for protocols.
