  • KIPP University Prep High School, founded in 2009;
  • KIPP Camino Academy, founded in 2010;
  • KIPP Un Mundo Dual Language Academy, founded in 2012;
  • KIPP Esperanza Dual Language Academy, founded in 2014; and
  • KIPP Poder Academy, founded August 2015.

Role Overview

The Director of Teaching Excellence (DTE) works to set a clear, common vision of teaching excellence across KIPP San Antonio. The DTE works with a subset of teachers, school leadership teams, and regional leaders to significantly increase the number of good and great teachers across KIPP San Antonio.

The DTE is someone who is equal parts master teacher, proven coach of coaches, and organizational change agent.

Reports To Chief Talent Officer (CTO)

Key Responsibilities Lead the Execution of an Integrated Teacher Development Strategy

  • Assist the CTO in the creation & communication of an integrated teacher development strategy
  • Build authentic relationships across a vast range of stakeholders in order to listen, learn, influence, & enlist. Ground insights in a combination of personal experiences, feedback, achievement and practice data, & researched best practices
  • Operationalize the Teacher Development Strategy across all segments of teachers, ranging from personally designing & delivering training to School Leadership teams, personally designing and executing coaching for top teachers, and partnering with other regional leaders
  • In close partnership with the CTO, realize the evolution of an integrated Teacher Development Strategy into the ’17-18 Academic Year
  • Design & deliver high-impact professional learning sessions focused on developing teachers
  • Oversee the design, collection, & execution of ongoing data analysis on teaching performance

Align KIPP San Antonio to a common picture of teaching excellence; develop judgment across the organization that results in common vision and diagnosis

  • Leverage the Common Definition of Excellence for Teaching to develop interrater reliability as a means toward developing teacher coach judgment & diagnosis
  • Ground coaching & strategy in a differentiation of need based on a common picture of teaching excellence

Create and Implement a Coaching “Playbook” to Strengthen Teacher Coaching

  • Design & implement an all-hands-on-deck approach to leveraging Teach Like A Champion to create a common language and strong skill to better coach & develop teachers

In ’16-17, double the number of Great Teachers in KIPP San Antonio

  • Identify the top 10% of teachers at KIPP San Antonio & develop a strategy to accelerate development & double the number of teachers identified as excellent
  • Strike a balance between coaching best teachers & working closely with Assistant School Leaders to develop ability to coach & develop

Continue to implement Teacher Career Pathways program with a strong emphasis on celebrating and recognizing best teachers

  • Oversee implementation of the Teacher Career Pathways program & generate bi-weekly reports monitoring process & quality of coaching
  • Strengthen teacher recognition efforts by initiating programs & coordinating efforts
  • Partner with the CTO to create a 2.0 version of our Teacher Career Pathways, including a clearer position on how to determine & measure teacher performance

In ’17-18, support and oversee our Graduate Teaching Residents

  • Directly support 15-25 Graduate Teaching Residents “teaching fellows” in schools
  • Partner with school leaders to provide aligned support & problem solve issues

Project management

  • With the CTO, plan for & lead change across KIPP San Antonio
  • Manage Teacher Development across the organization
  • Measure, track, & analyze effectiveness & impact of various initiatives
  • Collect, analyze, and report on quantitative & qualitative data to measure growth & identify gaps
  • Report progress to the CTO, Chief Academic Officer, the Head of Schools, & School Leaders


  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four-year educational institution
  • Masters’ Degree in Teaching and Learning, Curriculum and Instruction, Educational Leadership or other relevant area of study preferred


  • A proven track record of:
  • Student achievement and mastery as a teacher
  • Developing great teachers to exemplar, good teachers to great, and struggling teachers to solid
  • Coaching other coaches so that it increases student achievement
  • Project management and project implementation
  • Experience working across a system & through layers to improve quality & impact
  • Extensive experience coaching & managing adults with a minimum of 2 years in a significant leadership role
  • Experience providing professional learning opportunities to adults with measured success
  • Ability to design adult learning models
