JOB TITLE: Laboratory Technologist

Schedule: Various Days 12 AM - 8 AM

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Responsible to perform laboratory testing assigned to the department. Recognize unusual test results and resolve discrepancies. Maintain knowledge of all current standard operating procedures required to perform effectively. Maintain excellent communication with the Department and other Laboratory Services personnel.


Education: Associates Degree with certification in an Applied Science or equivalent

Bachelor's Degree in Applied Sciences or equivalent preferred

Experience: One year laboratory experience preferred

Computer experience preferred

Certification: Certified MLT or equivalent preferred

Categorical Certifications preferred


Essential Functions:

  1. Competently perform all assigned departmental duties. May perform Pre-Analytical tasks [receipt, qualification, and preparation of samples for testing] and highly complex testing on patients, donors, and/or biologic products.

  2. Evaluate test results in an accurate and timely manner, and recognize and report unusual test results.

  3. Operate equipment utilizing established protocols and within quality control limits.

  4. Recognize equipment malfunctions and/or technical problems and take appropriate steps to resolve.

  5. Maintain strict adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

  6. Prepare and maintain reports/records and perform computer data entry.

  7. Maintain departmental supplies within established inventory levels.

Nonessential Functions:

  1. Assist in other laboratory areas as directed.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Will require walking, bending, and prolonged sitting and/or standing during work hours. Required to carry up to 25 lbs. and occasionally lift up to 40 lbs. Requires finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Requires normal or corrected vision and hearing to a normal range.

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Works in a well lighted, air conditioned and heated laboratory. Laboratory consists of complex setting with robotic instrumentation. May be exposed to body fluids, blood borne pathogens, electrical, mechanical, laser, chemical, and infectious hazards. May have bodily exposure to refrigerator/freezer temperatures, especially hands and face. Will work extended hours during peak periods. May be required to work any time of the day, evening or night during the week or weekend to include being on-call.
