Job Summary

The South Texas Veterans Health Care System is looking for a highly motivated staff physician (Hematology/Oncology) for the Audie L. Murphy VA Hospital in San Antonio Texas. The incumbent works directly under the supervision of Chief, Hematology/Oncology. He-She will frequently function independently from direct supervision, and must perform required duties in a timely and professional manner.

DutiesMajor Duties

The Medicine Service Mission is to lead satisfied staff dedicated to providing high quality patient centered care here at STVHCS, a great tertiary training and research Veteran's Hospital. The Hematology/Oncology position supports this mission through administrative dependability, direct patient care, and support of their Section's educational and research activities and is located at the Audie L. Murphy VA Hospital.

Administrative Duties include, but are not limited to, Leadership responsibilities; Human Resources; Staff Management; Time/Leave Management and Clinical Management.

Clinical Duties include, but are not limited to, Patient Care; Medical/Clinical Knowledge; Clinical Judgment; Interpersonal & Communication Skills; Professionalism and System-Based Practice. There is also some in-patient care and supervision of resident call.

Education/Teaching Duties: Practitioners are expected to show effectiveness in teaching, monitoring, and coordinating educational activities, and comply with necessary trainee supervision.

Research Duties (if applicable): Physician researchers will show an ability to identify and define significant Research and Development problems, to plan and execute a precise research program, and to generate effective reports and results worthy of publication. Researchers are responsible for oversight of any research staff that they supervise.

Preferred Experience:

  1. Active ABIM Board Certification or Board Eligible in Oncology and Hematology

  2. Current/Full/Unrestricted License

  3. Greater than 1 year of experience teaching in a Hematology-Oncology Fellowship

  4. Experience Teaching/Evaluation Internal Medicine Residency or Fellowship program in the last 5 years.

  5. Active Patient Care duties in Inpatient Internal Medicine setting within the last 2 years

  6. Evidence/form of scholarly activity (poster/Meeting Presentation/Educational Lectures/Equivalent)

  7. Experience with Electronic Medical Records and admission and acute care procedures.

  8. Experience with adult patients

Qualifications And EvaluationQualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • Citizenship of the United States. Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with Department of Veterans Affairs policy.

  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.

  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.

  • Completion of a first-year residency, or its equivalent, approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which it was completed.

  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Physical Requirements:

A pre-placement physical examination will be completed prior to appointment to determine the physical and mental fitness of candidates. Physical requirements include, but not limited to: moderate lifting (15-44 pounds), light carrying (under 15 pounds), reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, use of both hands, walking and/or standing (up to 6 hours), repeated bending (2-4 hours), near vision correctable at 13' to 16' to Jaeger 1 to 4, far vision 20/30, hearing (aid permitted), mental/emotional stability, ability to perform privileges, independently performs physical exams as appropriate to position , and cognitive stability.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
