Rackspace Virtualization Engineer II in San Antonio, Texas
Overview & Responsibilities
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY: Responsible for infrastructure tasks including provisioning hypervisors, connectivity issues, upgrades, and day-to-day issues and audits. Designs, builds, administers, maintains, and troubleshoots complex VMware environments. Ensures utilization of proper change management procedures regarding the installation and testing of all upgrades and enhancements for VMware infrastructure. Troubleshoots problems and take corrective action on a timely and effective basis. Provides technical support to internal and external users.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITY: Intermediate working knowledge of Microsoft platforms and technologies including: VMWare, IIS and SQL Server. Intermediate operating systems knowledge (Windows and Linux). General network administration skills. Working knowledge of fibre channel SANS, NFS, and ISCSI.
JOB COMPLEXITY: Works appropriate level tickets in queue. Monitors and provides maintenance for all related infrastructure. Works with vendors to resolve hardware and software issues. Gathers data for capacity planning and performance analysis of infrastructure. Develops projects to improve performance, efficiency, experience, capacity, etc. of environments. Acts as the primary interface for the client or project manager for basic to intermediate projects. Implements large, complex enterprise-class solutions using Citrix, Microsoft, and VMware technologies. Ensures the control, integrity, and accessibility of the VMware environment for the enterprise. Performs regular checks of system components for errors and application of necessary corrective action.
SUPERVISION: Operates with independent judgment on daily tasks. Mentors level I engineers.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: General office environment. May require long periods sitting and viewing a computer monitor. High levels of stress may occur at times. No special physical demands required. Due to the 24x7x365 operations of the business, must be able to work a flexible work schedule, may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
- EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION: High school diploma or GED required. Bachelor’s degree preferred. Requires 2-3 years related technical experience in systems engineering or administration including experience in various virtualization systems. Internal candidates require experience in a Systems Administrator role (Rackspace L2 or L3 equivalent). The following certifications preferred: CCIA, CCEE, CCEA, CCA, VCP, MCSE/MCITP.
