Job Summary

The Central Texas Veterans Health Care System (CTVHCS), is comprised of two large Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) medical centers located in Temple and Waco, a large stand-alone multi-specialty outpatient clinic in Austin, four outpatient clinics located in Brownwood, Bryan/College Station, Cedar Park, and Palestine plus a rural outreach clinic in La Grange.

CTVHCS has affiliation agreements with Texas A&M College of Medicine/Baylor-Scott and White Healthcare System, the University of Texas Southwestern/Seton Healthcare Network, and the Texas Department of State Health Services. More than 250 Residents and Fellows are trained annually at CTHVCS, plus more than 200 medical students per year. Over 100 CTVHCS medical staff have faculty appointments with Texas A&M College of Medicine.

DutiesMajor Duties

This position is part-time, 20 hours per week. The annual salary will be prorated based on the number of hours worked.

The incumbent will be assigned to the Mental Health and Behavioral Medicine (MH&BM) Service, and may provide psychiatric services to patients seeking treatment in the Primary Care Behavioral Health Clinic (Primary Care-Mental Health Integration) outpatient General Mental Health Services and provide support for the Consult/Liaison and SATP ambulatory Detox patients in Temple. The primary responsibilities will be the diagnostic assessment, medication management, and coordination of care for individuals with co-occurring disorders and serious mental illnesses, including Major Depression, Bipolar Disorder, Schizophrenia, SUD and PTSD. The skills preferred: knowledge, training or interest in the diagnosis and treatment of SUDs, including interest in, or familiarity with use of buprenorphine in the treatment of opioid use disorder, naltrexone for the treatment of alcohol use disorder and ambulatory detoxification of mild alcohol withdrawal. Duties include but are not limited to:

·The incumbent will facilitate transfers to the Waco Inpatient Psychiatry Unit for those Veterans

requiring acute psychiatric hospitalization.

·Research opportunities are available and encouraged. It will be expected that the incumbent

will support research and training activities including those at the Center of Excellence.

·The incumbent will perform teaching activities and supervision of Medical Education residents and

medical students, as available.

·The incumbent will maintain an academic pursue appointment with the Texas A&M Health Science

Center College of Medicine Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science.

·The incumbent will provide collaborative support to Pharmacy Doctorate level prescribers and

residents, as assigned.

·The incumbent will provide collaborative support for Advanced Practice Nurses, as assigned.

·Interest and expertise in management of psychiatric emergencies and provision of both

pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy is preferred

·Board certification is preferred.

Qualifications And EvaluationQualifications

Basic Requirements:

·Citizenship: Citizen of the United States. (Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g, this part.

·Education: Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are: (1)

Schools of medicine holding regular institutional membership in the Association

of American Medical Colleges for the year in which the degree was granted. (2) Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the American Medical Association for the year in which the degree was granted. (3) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or in the District of Columbia as qualifying for full or unrestricted licensure.

·Licensure: Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. The physician must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure. The facility Director may waive this licensure requirement if the physician is to serve in a country other than the United States and the physician has licensure in that country.

·English Language Proficiency: Physicians, including residents, appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d).

·Pre-employment physical: Must pass a pre-employment examination prior to appointment.

Preferred Experience:Board certification in Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN).
