Provides and administers comprehensive respiratory care services to patients, as ordered by a patient's attending physician, to contribute to the delivery of quality patient care.
WHAT IS EXPECTED (ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS)
PROVIDES AND ADMINISTERS COMPREHENSIVE RESPIRATORY CARE
SERVICES TO PATIENTS TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE DELIVERY OF QUALITY
Performs and directs the administration of respiratory care services (including but not limited to oxygen therapy, aerosol therapy, inhaled medications, IPPB therapy, invasive and non-invasive ventilation and bedside spirometry), as ordered by a patient's physician
Works with other health care professionals routinely to ensure that patients receive the appropriate therapy and/or proper ventilation management
Instructs patients in the use of various RT equipment and treatments in a thorough and professional manner
Adheres to established infection control and isolation procedures at all times
RECORDS AND REPORTS TREATMENTS GIVEN TO PATIENTS AS WELL AS THE PATIENTS' RESPONSE TO TREATMENTS
Records all therapies provided in patients' records, and reports all unusual signs, symptoms or side effects immediately to the nurse in charge.
Records treatments given, supplies used and the corresponding patient charges accurately, and completes the appropriate departmental records daily.
PERFORMS IN-SERVICE TRAINING OF PERSONNEL, AND ASSISTS IN TRAINING STUDENTS AND NEW EMPLOYEES IN RESPIRATORY THERAPY TECHNIQUES AND PROCEDURES
Provides in-service training for personnel in a professional manner
Works willingly and professionally with assigned students/new employees to assist in their training of established respiratory techniques and procedures
Performs other position appropriate duties as required in a competent, professional and courteous manner
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Graduate of an AMA accredited Respiratory Care school
Two years of experience in the Intensive Care setting or a Bachelor¿s Degree in Respiratory Care
Respiratory Care Practitioner license from the Texas Department of State Health Services required
Registered Respiratory Therapist from the National Board of Respiratory Care required
Takes responsibility to understand and complete professional and technical requirements and provide Scott & White with the necessary documentation on such requirements.
Possess advanced skills in ventilator management, patient assessment, and operation of respiratory adjuncts and selection.
Using advanced assessment skills, recognizes decline in patient status prior to overall decline in patient condition
Clinical judgment supports good decision making
Active role in and contributes to overall patient plan of care
Supports/participates in development of junior staff and acts as preceptor when needed (i.e. Residents, student nurses, student respiratory therapists, volunteers)
Capable of functioning in a team leader role when necessary
Effectively manages and influences others during time of heavy and complex workloads
