Position Summary Information
Performs husbandry duties for laboratory animals, including the sanitation of assigned animal holding rooms and the maintenance of assigned support areas.
Required Education and Experience
High school graduation or any equivalent combination of training and experience. Six months laboratory animal care experience with required education or three months of laboratory animal care experience with a college degree of two or more years duration. Successful completion of a formal Laboratory Animal Science Course may substitute for three months of laboratory animal care experience.
Preferred Education and Experience
Successful completion of CMP Laboratory Animal Science Course.
Required Licenses, Certifications, or Registrations

American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification. Valid driver’s license and good driving record.
Required Special Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills
Successful completion of any CMP Laboratory Animal Science Course within first year in position. Oral and written communication skills. Organizational skills.

Other Requirements or Other Factors
Availability to work outside of normal business hours; such as a Tuesday thru Saturday shift or a Sunday thru Thursday shift. Work weekends and Holidays as required. Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

Detailed Job Duties
-Performs husbandry duties for assigned conventional and specific pathogen free research animal colonies.
-Follows established protocols and procedures and ensures compliance with applicable federal, state and local laws, regulation and guidelines concerning quality assurance and laboratory animal care and use.
-Observes all laboratory animals in assigned work areas and reports any sick, injured or distressed animals.
-Records accurate daily observation of animals and environmental parameters.
-Participates in training and continued education activities as required by federal guidelines and accreditation standards.
-Interacts and communicates effectively with Texas A&M University research staff and Comparative Medicine Program (CMP) staff.
-Attend meetings as required.
-Cleans and maintains laboratory animal care areas and cage wash area and documents sanitation and maintenance of assigned areas.
-Operates cage washers and autoclaves, including reporting any malfunctioning equipment and documenting daily equipment performance.
-Transports animals, caging equipment, bulk feed, and bedding materials.
Performs other duties as assigned.
