Position Summary Information
IODP TITLE: MANAGER OF PUBLICATIONS SERVICES – Accountable for carrying out managerial duties in support of all the production and dissemination of reports and publications, and other tasks and services provided by the IODP JOIDES Resolution Science Operator (JRSO). Hire and manage staff needed to carry out requirements of the department, as defined by the IODP JRSO.
Required Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in science, journalism, language, or a related field or any equivalent combination of training and experience. Eight years of experience in scientific publishing, including three years in a supervisory position, experience with personnel management, three years in a management position, experience with financial and programmatic development and management and experience in a service-oriented position.
Preferred Education and Experience
Master’s degree in science, journalism, language, or a related field. Experience in development of book, Web, and CD publications. Experience running a publications department or group of related scope. Experience working on collaborative projects with international organizations or agencies.
Required Licenses, Certifications, or Registrations
Ability to obtain passport and international travel visas on a continuing basis.

Required Special Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills
Working knowledge of standard computer hardware and software applications. Working knowledge of editing, publishing, and graphics software and computer-based electronic publishing techniques and tools. Strong supervisory skills. Excellent communication (both oral and written) and interpersonal skills. Strong management skills: detail oriented; organizational skills to successfully organize tasks, multitask, and prioritize work. Ability to balance interacting with supervisor and staff with working independently. Ability to work professionally, harmoniously, and cooperatively with others.
Preferred Special Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills
Experience applying computer-based electronic publication techniques and tools. Familiarity with aspects of scientific ocean drilling. Experience working on ODP and/or IODP publications. Background in the oceanographic sciences.

Detailed Job Duties
Working in collaboration with other IODP groups (Implementing Organizations, Scientific Advisory Structure panels), play a leadership role in: development of publication and report formats for IODP products; establishment of style guidelines and publication procedures; and establishment of standards for quality control. Oversee and manage delivery of publications, reports, and special projects on a timely schedule. Oversee completion of ODP, IODP publications and other legacy tasks.
Personnel: Hire and manage staff needed to carry out requirements of the department, as defined by the JRSO. Supervise all department supervisors and oversee supervision of department staff and student workers. Be familiar with, comply with, and administer all IODP, TAMU, TAMRF, state, and federal policies that pertain to the department. Demonstrate leadership qualities at an exemplary level. Formulate department policies, resolve personnel issues, conduct performance appraisals, and coordinate professional development for staff. Work cooperatively with others at all times, demonstrating teamwork and displaying a service-oriented attitude in all IODP interactions. Assign work to staff; stay abreast of status of assigned projects to ensure work stays on schedule. Coordinate special projects handled by the section. Other Duties as Assigned.
Prepare and manage department budget; interface with Administration. Work with other IODP implementing organizations on development of scope of work, contract negotiation, and/or maintenance of any subcontracts.
Work with IODP Implementing Organizations, and Scientific Advisory Structure panels to establish publication policy guidelines. Communicate policy requirements to scientific party members and Co-Chief Scientists.
Provide oversight to the content of the publications and reports sections of the JRSO Web site; work with Web Administrator on design of these sections
Ensure report and publication schedules are met. Monitor status of performance for all scientific party members.
Participate in the JRSO management team. Prepare reports and updates for SAS panel meetings; attend appropriate panel meetings; give presentations as required. Keep abreast of all panel recommendations.
Handle some or all of Assistant Director’s duties in his/her absence. Lead special projects. Promote cooperation among a diverse scientific program and associated community. Duties consist of sitting at computer or desk 85% of time; the other 15% spent walking, standing, and /or lifting medium to heavy weight objects (books and supplies).
