Job Summary

The Central Texas Veterans Health Care System (CTVHCS), is comprised of two large Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) medical centers located in Temple and Waco, a large stand-alone multi-specialty outpatient clinic in Austin, four outpatient clinics located in Brownwood, Bryan/College Station, Cedar Park, and Palestine plus a rural outreach clinic in La Grange.

CTVHCS has affiliation agreements with Texas A&M College of Medicine/Baylor-Scott and White Healthcare System, the University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School, and the Texas Department of State Health Services. More than 250 Residents and Fellows are trained annually at CTHVCS, plus more than 200 medical students per year. Over 100 CTVHCS medical staff have faculty appointments with Texas A&M College of Medicine.

DutiesMajor Duties

The incumbent will be assigned to the Mental Health and Behavioral Medicine (MH&BM) Service in Waco, Texas. The incumbent will provide psychiatric services to patients seeking treatment on a same day walk-in basis in as referred by Ambulatory Care Providers to the Primary Care Behavioral Health (Primary Care-Mental Health Integration) Clinic. Primary responsibilities will be diagnostic assessment, medication management and coordination of care for individuals with mental illnesses, including Major Depressive Disorders, PTSD and Substance Use Disorders as well as co-morbid medical conditions. The incumbent will facilitate transfers to the Waco outpatient Mental Health Clinic for patients with Bipolar Disorder, Schizophrenia, and other severe mental illnesses and will facilitate transfers to Inpatient Psychiatry Unit for those Veterans requiring acute psychiatric hospitalization. The incumbent will review consults coming to Waco Primary Care Behavioral Health. The incumbent will be under the supervision of the supervisory psychiatrist, Waco Campus. The incumbent will perform teaching activities and supervision of fellows, residents, and medical students, as available. The incumbent will maintain an academic appointment with the Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science. Research opportunities are available and encouraged. Interest and expertise in management of psychiatric emergencies such as acutely suicidal patients as well as chronic serious mental illnesses is preferred including the provision of pharmacotherapy. Board certification is preferred but board eligible candidates are also welcome to apply.

This is a bargaining unit position.

Qualifications And EvaluationQualifications

Basic Requirements:

·Must be US Citizen (Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in

accordance with Department of Veterans Affairs policy.

·Must have a degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of

educationin medicine or osteopathic medicine. The

degree must have been obtained from an

institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was


Approved schools are: (1)Schools of

medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted, or

(2)Schools of

osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) of the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.

(3) For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, facility officials must verify with the

Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) that the applicant has met requirements

for certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant.

·Must possess a current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State,

Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia

·Must have completed a residency training or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans

Affairs, in anaccredited core specialty training program

leading to eligibility for board certification.

(NOTE: VA Physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.)

Preferred Experience: Board certification in Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). Interest and expertise in management of psychiatric emergencies and provision of both pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy.

Staff Physician: The individual must qualify to perform duties as a physician, have completed an accredited residency and/or possess experience which has qualified the individual to perform general duties and some specialized functions and procedures without supervision. Staff physicians may also include attendings who train physician residents assigned in facilities with residency training programs, and consultants who are capable of giving authoritative views and opinions on subjects in their field of medicine.
