Job Summary

Laboratory technician will study behavioral and cellular mechanisms of depression and addiction using rodents as model systems. Duties will involve a combination of the following tasks: purchasing lab supplies, Western blot, immunohistochemistry, rodent colony management, making solutions, microscopy, and preparation of live brain tissue obtained from rats and mice. If enough progress is made, there is a chance for participation in experiments for publication. Experiments may involve anatomical, biochemical, and behavioral techniques.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Performs routine scientific in the area of behavioral neuroscience. Assembles and/or operates various laboratory equipment and apparatus. Records research data in accordance with prescribed procedures, discussing results with supervisor. Assists in collection of data for project reports. Reads literature and confers with supervisor concerning implementation of new procedures. May plan for, and provide working supervision to, work of laboratory personnel of lower grade engaged in limited phase of research project. Individual will also help with organizing and maintaining laboratory equipment and supplies, and monitoring inventory levels, and ordering materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures.

Required Qualifications

High school graduation or equivalent. Six months of experience in laboratory work.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with neuroscience laboratory techniques, including animal behavior. Experience planning, executing, and troubleshooting projects.

Working Conditions

Hazardous materials, rodents (rats, mice). Periods of prolonged standing, sitting. May walk across campus multiple times in a single day (appox 400m each way). May be required to work weekends and before/after hours. Travel may be needed, but not required.
