Summary

Performs supervisory Medical Supply Technician duties in decontamination, preparation and sterilization, and case cart section in the Sterile Processing Service (SPS) Austin, TX of Central Texas Veteran Health Care System. The incumbent must complete Level I and Level II Training thereby obtaining Certified Registered Medical Supply Status. The incumbent must adhere to all Policies and Procedure in performance of duties.

Responsibilities

The incumbent must have a working knowledge of techniques in the proper collection of soiled reusable medical equipment, use of disinfectants, decontamination of all reusable medical equipment for steam or gas sterilization or disinfection, sterilizer loading and unloading procedures, methods of wrapping and sealing packages, reprocessing requirements in the event of recall or other need to reprocess prior to use, interpretation of chemical indicator, mechanical tapes/printout, incubation of biological challenges and interpretation of results, proper operation of all mechanical equipment used in reprocessing and first-line care and maintenance of patient care equipment. Resolves simple, informal complaints of employees and monitors performance progress and training needs employees. Monitors working conditions and approves leave requests while maintaining required staffing levels for all tours of duty. Amends or rejects work not meeting established standards. Checks on work in progress, spot checks work, and review completed work to see that instruction on work sequence, procedures, methods and deadlines have been met. Maintains current knowledge on Reusable Medical Equipment procedures, policies, and directives in order to answer questions of employees. Instructing employees in specific tasks and job techniques and making available written instructions, reference materials and supplies providing on the job training to new employees. Estimates and reports on expected time of completion of work and maintaining records of work accomplishments and time expended and preparing production reports as requested.Reviews the status and progress of work and makes adjustments in accordance with establishing priorities. Distributing and balancing the workload among employees in accordance with established work flow or job specialization, assuring timely accomplishment of the assigned work.

Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-08 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-07. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. Note:Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.

You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:* Sterile Processing Experience Required* * Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-07 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled and which has equipped the candidate with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position, to include experience as lead medical sterile supply technician or supervisory in medical sterile supply processing and distribution. In addition, experience in processing, assembling, trouble-shooting, preparing, sterilizing, storing and issuing sterile and unsterile medical/surgical supplies and equipment; experience that required knowledge of the technical names, general uses, physical characteristics and operating conditions of medical/surgical supply items ; experience that required knowledge of decontamination, cleaning , preparation, collection of soiled supplies, use of disinfectants, decontamination of all materials, supplies and instruments for steam or gas sterilization; experience that required knowledge of aseptic techniques, and experience in operating a washer-sterilizer, ultrasonic instrument cleaners and steam sterilizers. OR, * Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have completed two (2) years of graduate education or master's degree in courses related to this position such as medical supply processing, storage and distribution, sterile supplies, operating room, and surgical technician courses; or other fields related to this position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent one (1) year of full-time study. If that number cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours will be considered an academic year of graduate study. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED). OR, * Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements:Selected applicants will be required to complete an online onboarding process. The employee performs a majority of work standing or walking with some kneeling, crouching, and reaching. In addition, the employee regularly pushes loaded carts weighing several hundred pounds, aligns them on tracks in sterilizers and must walk and pull delivery carts up inclines and over rises. There is a frequent requirement for lifting baskets of stainless steel instruments weighing 25 pounds from floor level to chest level and occasional requirements for similarly lifting baskets weighing 40 pounds. MUST BE ABLE TO WEAR PROTECTIVE CLOTHING AND EQUIPMENT.
