BAE Systems Test Engineering Functional Manager in Austin, Texas

Job Description

BAE Systems is looking for a first line engineering manager for our Integrated Test Engineering Department in Austin, Texas. The successful applicant will be responsible for all aspects of establishing semi-automated production test capabilities that supports production sell-off. The responsibilities include business capture / project estimation, project planning and execution, and management of the assigned workforce.

The applicants must have successfully demonstrated project and personnel leadership skills in prior assignments. This position requires the candidate be a supervisor of 15 engineers with various engineering backgrounds (software, electrical, mechanical, systems, technicians) while also contributing technically to a program(s) or project(s).

This position requires relevant experience that supports leadership of small teams that develop production test solutions. Test solutions include test stands, test equipment interfaces, test software that automates/semi-automates the test environment for complex electronics manufacturing.

Typical Education & Experience

Typically a Bachelor's Degree and 10 years work experience or equivalent experience

Required Skills and Education

Test Domain Expertise:

  • Ability to lead test engineers while successfully collaborating with other managers or engineers from other disciplines

  • People skills that support collaboration across multiple channels, a good listener, promotes solutions versus problems, an advocate (and coach) for direct reports

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Motivated, team-oriented individual with strong problem-solving abilities

  • Working knowledge of the development life-cycle, Design For Manufacturability, Design for Test, Test Equipment and Test Equipment Maintenance

  • Test skills and knowledge of both Engineering and Operations

  • Ability to estimate cost & schedules and manage projects

  • Current Secret clearance or higher

  • Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering degree

  • Software & Hardware experience

  • Experience in Labview or LabWindows/CVI and MS Visual Studio


Recruit, select, train, assess, develop, retain and apply engineering staff required to achieve business objectives.

Identify personnel requirements and support the development and execution of staffing plans.

Manage, coach and mentor staff members, provide technical and career development guidance.

Support the rotation of engineering staff IAW with ES Rotational Program and individual Career Development Plan.

Supervise the technical work of assigned staff, and hold direct reports accountable for their work.

Provide a safe, stimulating, engaging and positive work environment.

Establish clear, measurable objectives (SMART) that raise the bar and provide opportunity to execute tasks at the next level.

Identify critical skill needs for your projects; grow/retain a bench of critical skills.

Promote Engineering Test vision, mission and strategy.


Partner with Business Area leadership to provide enabling capabilities, resources, and processes required to meet business objectives. Support the Business Area/Product Line and Engineering strategic objectives.

Provide leadership through active participation in Work Product Reviews, etc.

Be accountable for all aspects of the engr projects under your purview; Cost, Schedule, Technical and Quality.

Provide timely staffing on programs, and proactively identify staffing levels and skill requirements.

Support the development of technical proposals and estimates of work.

Review and concur with the Engineering portion of proposed work for your area of responsibility.

Hold staff accountable for all Engineering content on projects under your purview.

Review/approve tailored discipline specific development plans; ensure teams follow plans.

Review project Risks & Opportunities with project leads and report status as required.

Understand scope changes with respect to the baseline staffing plan; periodically review scope compliance and communicate deviations from the plan to the Business Area Discipline Lead and the Project Technical Leader.

Communicate, Negotiate, and Elevate when appropriate


Proactively support the proper application and refinement and of the discipline processes

Work with staff members to effectively instill the right level of process tailoring.

Involve employees in lean and continuous improvement activities.

Ensure lessons learned are understood/leveraged on programs pre and post execution.

MS in Electrical or SW Engineering with 10 years of Experience
