Child Life Specialist - PRN (As Needed)

Child Life Specialist Job Summary:
Provides for the developmental needs of hospitalized children age 0-21 to include advocating for psychosocial, emotional, physical and cognitive needs. Decreases the anxiety and/or trauma with illness and hospitalization through interventions, which promote play, learning, mastery, self-expression, and peer interaction. Educates staff and the community concerning the developmental needs of hospitalized children, reactions of children to illness and hospitalization, and family centered care. Advocates for policy and standards of care which support the special needs of children and families.
- Bachelor’s degree in Child Life or Child Development and a Child Life internship program of 400-650 hours under a certified Child Life Specialist.
Must be Certified under the specifications for Child Life Certification by the Child Life Council, Inc., or eligible to sit for Child Life Certification exam.
Must obtain certification within 18 months of hire date.
American Heart Association BLS provider obtained within 6 months of hire.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:
- Knowledge and understanding of growth and development theories of play, family dynamics, and development assessment. Basic understanding of medical terminology and procedures as well as knowledge of reactions of children and families to illness and healthcare experience. Facilitation of interventions to support coping and minimize stress and anxiety. Working relationships to support a collaborative approach to caring for ill children.
- Ability to cope with death and/or loss of developmental function
