Job Summary

The Director of Safety for Greenbrier Rail Services will have a wide scope and depth of responsibilities. These responsibilities include coordinating EHS compliance efforts, communicating EHS initiatives across operations network, identifying and managing EHS resources and supporting company-wide programs across a variety of functional areas. This position includes detailed, hands-on support of GRS divisional and corporate EHS initiatives including leadership, technical guidance and project management.

This position will provide technical information, support and leadership throughout the GRS organization and directly to members of the GRS leadership/management team. A combined knowledge of industrial and/or manufacturing processes with strong technical EHS know-how and excellent interpersonal skills is required to effectively execute the responsibilities of this position.

Duties and Responsibilities

*Develops and monitors EHS leading indicators and performance metrics that reflect operations EHS related key initiatives

*Assists and/or manages as needed, EHS compliance activities throughout GRS operations

*Key project team member in the design and implementation of GRS Intelex EHS MIS (management information system)

*Assists in the management of GRS operations environmental compliance initiatives throughout the organization

*Prepares statements of work, bid packages and management of outside technical EHS consultants

*Provides professional development and training of operations site EHS management

*Plans, organizes, leads and manages the resources available to GRS through risk control services, leveraging the resources of insurance carriers and claims administration.

*Key project team member in the selection, development and implementation of Behavior Based Safety (BBS) program initiatives throughout GRS operations -- manages the on-going BBS activities throughout GRS operations and reports metrics that reflect BBS impact upon safety incident reductions

*Manages the design and implementation of the ANSI Z10 EHS management system across the GRS network

*Extensive involvement in the development and implementation of network wide EHS audit activities including:

*Lead Auditor in the assessment of complicate to EHS requirements throughout GRS operations

*Develops audit reports, corrective action plans and follow-ups to audit reports to ensure sustainable closure and management of identified audit issues.

*Trains site EHS managers in the auditing process of EHS regulatory and GRS EHS policy and procedure

*Provides information to operations site EHS team members and informs select GRS management team members about changes to EHS legislation that impact their operation. Leads the effort in establishing a consistent process across operations to comply with changes in EHS regulatory requirements.

*Assists GRS site EHS personnel and GRS Environmental Manager in the acquisition and maintenance to environmental permits; ensures site employee training associated with environmental permits is being performed.

*Assists GRS Training Director in the development and implementation of network-wide EHS training programs

*Directs and manages the GRS EHS policy development, review and implementation process

*Coordinates select reporting and follow-ups on workers compensation data

*Manages the development and communication of EHS "best practices" throughout GRS operations network

*Trains and supports site EHS team members in the development and implementation of EHS initiatives and projects

*Provides guidance and assistance to site EHS team members on compliance to EHS regulations and GRS EHS policies.

*Assists site EHS Managers in the planning and execution of Industrial Hygiene sampling, analytical and data reporting that are representative of exposures throughout operations.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

*Considerable knowledge of accepted EHS practices and principles

*Experience partnering with operational management

*Advanced proficiency in Excel and Word required; experience with EHS Management Information System a plus
