Dow Chemical Research Engineer / Scientist in Freeport, Texas

The Dow Chemical Companyhas an opportunity available for aResearch Engineer/Scientistfor Olefins, Aromatics and Alternatives Technology (OA&A) and Ethylene Oxide Ethylene Glycol (EOEG) R&D located inFreeport, TX.

The OA&A and EOEG R&D group is exploring a range of projects related to technologies with a specific focus on the production of ethylene, ethylene oxide and propylene. To support and develop these projects, we are seeking a chemical engineer or chemist whose primary role is to provide expertise for discovery, development, and implementation of new catalyst technology and new olefins process technology. The candidate will also provide expertise for the improvement and support of existing hydrocarbons production facilities. The candidate will work closely with manufacturing, technical experts, and R&D to provide innovative technological solutions. The scope of the work can be from proof of concept to technology demonstration and commercialization.

Primary Responsibilities:*

  • Lead the development of new technology ideas from proof of concept experiments through validation and commercialization.

  • Evaluate new catalyst technologies to improve production from hydrocarbon feedstocks.

  • Apply problem solving skills in an R&D environment

  • Assess competitive technologies and define how new technologies can be applied

  • Support for laboratory, pilot plant, or in-plant data generation and process development

  • Plan, develop, evaluate, and implement technology using creative and scientifically sound methodology

  • Apply and leverage technical skills to facilitate rapid progress against goals

  • Enable close cooperation between the R&D, Tech Center, Manufacturing & Engineering, Finance, Commercial, and Engineering Solutions groups

  • Documentation of results in reports and patent disclosures


  • Develop and maintain excellent knowledge of competitive technologies for olefins production in order to benchmark Dow technologies and approaches.

  • Apply technical skills and techniques for the design of proof of concept experiments and subsequent development and optimization of olefins processes under study.

  • Use innovative approaches to solve technical problems.

  • Work well both independently and on project teams.

  • Document work in a timely fashion in data books, Dow internal reports, patent disclosures, and external publications as appropriate.

  • Communicate results and progress to technical teams, supervision, management, and business leadership through oral presentations

Required Qualifications:

  • PhD in Engineering or Inorganic, Organometallic, Physical Chemistry OR Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering or Inorganic, Organometallic, Physical Chemistry with 3 years of industry experience

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

  • Experience with operation of lab reactor systems, small pilot plants, or process scale-up

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Research experiences in catalysis, alternative feedstocks, process design and optimization or separation systems is preferred

  • Experience with micro kinetic modeling is preferred
