The Chief Communications Officer is a critical, newly-created role with a mission to build DLA Piper’s reputation and relevance. We are seeking a strategic, energetic and influential leader who is able to develop and articulate a unified vision for the communications function. The successful individual will lead the strategic planning and execution of all communications functions including media relations, crisis communications, digital and social, brand management, design, awards and internal communications.

This position can sit in any of our US offices.

The Marketing and Business Development department is a highly collaborative team of professionals who work closely with practice groups and sectors to build the reputation of DLA Piper and our lawyers. The team works with firm leaders to create and execute strategy that addresses DLA Piper’s business goals. We also measure business efforts to identify the most strategic focus for our lawyers’ efforts.

Minimum Requirements:

  • 15 years' of experience in leadership roles responsible for managing a team, creating and implementing a communications strategy and plan

  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications or similar field; MBA a plus

  • Demonstrated experience positioning a company as an industry leader

  • Experience managing or executing brand strategy

  • Hands-on media relations experience including developing relationships with key reporters and pitching stories

  • Proven strategic thinker and savvy digital marketer to lead and drive the strategy, development, and execution of the digital marketing plan and emerging media initiatives

  • Knowledge of best-in-class marketing technology platforms and tools

  • Strong data and analytical mindset and an ability to set, measure and report on key performance indicators

  • Demonstrated experience driving an integrated plan across brand strategy, media relations, digital, social, search, awards, crisis communications and internal communications

  • Experience handling sensitive, confidential matters to mitigate reputational risk

  • Experience managing external agencies and ensuring strong ROI

What will your day look like?

The Chief Communications Officer is responsible for developing a sophisticated and measurable strategy to communicate the firm’s expertise and differentiators to key audiences including prospective clients, existing clients, prospective lateral attorneys and alumni. You will review and act on the firm’s strategic vision, develop and lead multi-channel strategy, understand audience segmentation, campaign management, and business development and trends in online strategies to support the overall direction of the firm.

Responsibilities include:

  • Develop a robust, innovative and integrated communications strategy which emphasizes the firm’s expertise setting us apart from our competitors

  • Interface with CITO, COO, General Counsel, CHRO, Management Committee and collaborating with International on global implementation

  • Ensure consistent messaging for the organization internally and externally across all channels

  • Lead firm-wide corporate website redesign including technology platform, architecture and content

  • Leverage data-driven insights to develop campaigns across channels that improve lifetime client satisfaction and guide prospective clients in identifying and investigating solutions

  • Serves as brand champion and directs ongoing brand strategy, brand framework, brand messaging, and brand performance tracking research to ensure brand is aligned with business objectives

  • Develop robust and creative media relations strategy and amplifies across all channels

  • Responsible for overseeing digital strategy team in developing a marketing technology roadmap and a robust, innovative digital marketing strategy which emphasizes the firm’s expertise and sets us apart from our competitors

  • Define key performance indicators and implements measurement, analytics and reporting methods to ensure success. Provide key data and analysis of digital activities to all relevant teams and senior firm leadership

  • Build external profile for the Chairman by leveraging media opportunities, social media, digital and speaking opportunities

  • Direct the design and manage the execution of creative programs to help the Chairman and Management Committee communicate and engage with our employees

  • Partner with General Counsel to devise communication strategy for confidential, sensitive matters

  • Experienced in managing staff, operations, budgets and the ability to set clear priorities

  • Comfort level with relatively small but capable team and budget on Day 1 that will scale over time


Reporting and team:

  • Reports to Chief Marketing and Business Development Officer

  • 3 direct reports, a team of 20 support from the IT team
