We have the unique and significantrole to partner with NASA at Johnson Space Center (JSC), to be part of everyhuman spaceflight program – the International Space Station (ISS), NASA’s Orionspacecraft, which will carry astronauts into deep space, and Gateway, theorbiting platform providing the home for astronauts to work and travel back andforth to the moon’s surface, and serving as the platform for deep spaceexploration. From critical systems onthe ISS to enable astronauts to live and work in space; to performing advanceddevelopment for systems leading to deep space exploration; to being part of thefoundation for Gateway.

We also partner with NASA at JSC,the only NASA center in the United States to curate all astromaterial samplesreturned from exploration missions, to perform curation services, orbitaldebris analysis, and basic research to further humankind’s understanding of theorigins of our solar system.

We are currently in need of an Electronics Design Chief Engineer - Space Exploration Electronics Systems to joinour team. Do youhave the following skills?

The Electronics Design Chief Engineer - Space Exploration Electronics Systemswill:

  • Reportdirectly to the Design and Analysis Group Manager. Theposition is responsible for the direct management of approximately 50people involved in various aspects of Electrical System Development across and in support of several NASA Engineering Divisions.

  • Supportnew designs from conception, analysis, andmanufacturing, through to operational test and deployment.

  • ProvideTechnical Leadership for Design Projects.

  • Establishdesign development approach and concept for a givenproject considering requirements, schedule, cost etc.

  • Workwith Design Leads to guide development process.

  • Workwith Design Section Manager and Design Lead in generatingdesign cost estimates and approval process.

  • Workas a Project Design Lead as required to supplement orreplace current design lead function.

  • Inspireand lead technical innovation amongst designengineers as pertains to design tools and practices.

  • Workwith Design Section Manager to establish best practicedesign processes and infrastructure.

  • Mentorand teach Design Leads and engineers in good designpractice.

  • Providequick technical and administrative response toprojects, removing roadblocks to ensure project success and customersatisfaction.

  • Presentdesign concepts and approaches to customers andproject managers as required.

  • Leadteam in anomaly resolution, fault tree development,troubleshooting, and implementation of technical solutions.

  • Identify,champion and utilize subject matter experts toresolve technical challenges for applicable projects.

  • SupportDesign Section Managers and Design Leads in theidentification and development of skilled personnel for a given project.

  • Workwith engineers to provide hands-on approach in thehardware design, build and test/verification process.

  • Conductdesign reviews to monitor technical correctness,design project health, and progress.

  • Developsuccession plan mentoring future Chief Engineers andTechnical Design Leads.

  • Demonstrateability to implement a wide range of technicalapproaches for the associated design discipline.

  • Developtechnical training modules as required.

  • Workwith Section Manager to ensure the selection of adequateElectronics/Electrical design personnel to accomplish associated tasks.

  • Performroutine electrical design reviews for cost, schedule,risk management, and deliverable adherence.

  • Conductoversight, mentorship and guidance to individualelectrical design task leads.

  • Workwith electrical design task leads to track and maintainefficient task performance.

  • Maintainan active list of lessons learned to actively informsection members.

  • Providesupport to engineering lab manager in maintaining andimproving electrical development area.

  • Maintainactive related risk management (technical, cost, andschedule) on all associated design tasks.

  • Workwith colleagues to coordinate issue resolution acrossmultiple JETS organizations which could include source limitations,technical challenges, process breakdowns, etc.

  • Establisha framework and oversight for technical correctnesson all work performed by associated design section.

  • Understandand be capable of generating comprehensive designconcepts based on a given set of requirements.

  • Providerough orders of magnitude (ROM's) and basis ofestimates (BOE's) for project and tasks.

  • Review,develop or update Electrical Design and Developmentprocesses as required.

  • Performother duties as required and assigned.



Required Experience/Education/Skills:

This position has been posted at multiple levels. Depending on the candidate's experience, requirements and business needs, we reserve the right to consider candidates at any level for which this position has been advertised.

  • BSdegree in Electrical Engineering from an accreditedengineering school and a minimum of fourteen (14) years of relatedengineering experience, or a MS degree in Electrical Engineering from anaccredited engineering school and a minimum of twelve (12) years ofrelated engineering experience, or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from anaccredited engineering school and a minimum of nine (9) years of relatedexperience.

  • Minimumof 5 years’ experience with NASA/JSC Electrical andElectronics flight intravehicular and extravehicular hardware developmentprocesses.

  • Familiaritywith NASA Work Instruction EA-023, JSC PolicyDirective 7120 (Class 1E), along with flight hardware certification andother flight hardware processes.

  • Priorexperience with electrical schematic entry and printedcircuit board layout tools such as Altium Designer.

  • Priorexperience with FPGA circuitry design and coding inassociated complex electronics development environments (such as VHDL, Verilog etc.).

  • Soundknowledge of and experience in EMI/EMC compliancedesign and testing per MIL-STD-461 standards.

  • Familiarityin selection and implementation of Electrical,Electronic and Electromagnetic (EEE) parts in electronics designassociated with space flight hardware.

  • Familiaritywith parts selection and electronics designmethods for survivability in ionizing radiation environments.

  • Excellentoral and written communication skills with ahistory of effectively interacting with senior managers at all levels.


  • Experiencewith hardware and FPGA-based development for motorcontrol systems (includes brushless DC or BLDC and stepper motors).

  • Experiencewith DC electromechanical power conversion (highpower, high performance actuation, electric motors and motor driveelectronics, etc.).

  • Experiencewith motor controller design, selection andintegration with associated mechanisms.

  • Experiencewith sensor fusion and fault tolerant controldesign for robotic actuators.

  • Understandingof classical and modern control theory.

  • Priorexperience with Robotic Operating System (ROS).

  • Experiencewith test hardware such as oscilloscopes,multi-meters, logic analyzers, function generators, electronic load banks,power supplies, power analyzers.

  • Priorexperience with microcontroller circuitry design andassociated embedded software development environments.

  • Handson experience in the design, build, and test ofembedded motor control systems.

  • Priorexperience with circuit simulation tools such asPspice, OrCAD, Multisim etc.

  • Experiencewith flex printed circuit board design.

  • Priorexperience with data acquisition systems (especiallyNational Instruments) and LabVIEW code development.

  • Familiaritywith data interface protocols and associatedhardware such as Ethernet, RS232, RS422, RS485, I2C, SPI etc.

  • Asuccessful track record of fielding custom electricalsystems in an operational setting.

  • Experiencein the hardware design of embedded systems(microcontrollers, FPGAs, sensor interfaces, I2C/SPI buses, UARTS, etc.)

  • Experiencewith test hardware such as oscilloscopes, multi-meters, logicanalyzers, function generators, electronic load banks, power supplies,power analyzers.

  • Priorexperience in design and test of analog instrumentationsystems.

  • Projectbased experience designing, building, testing, andtroubleshooting power distribution electronics, battery systems, and otherelectrical hardware (requirements definition; system modeling andsimulation; circuit analysis; PCB design, fabrication, and assembly;harness design and fabrication; requirements verification).

  • Excellentcommunication skills and the ability to work in amulti-disciplinary team of mechanical, electrical, and software engineersdesigning and building world-class, NASA space-flight hardware.

  • Priorexperience in design and test of power supply andconditioning systems.

  • Priorexperience with data acquisition systems (especiallyNational Instruments) and LabVIEW code development.

  • Priorexperience with microcontroller circuitry design andassociated embedded software development environments.

  • Priorexperience with cable design for space applications

  • Priorexperience in design and test of analog instrumentationsystems.

  • Priorexperience in design and test of stepper and brushlessDC-DC control circuits.

  • Experienceplanning and establishing work priorities.

Work Environment

Generally an office environment, but can involve inside or outside work depending on task.

Physical Requirements

Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods (90% of time). May require lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs (5% of time).

Regular attendance in accordance with established work schedule is critical. Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements when required.
