Description

The Research Consulting Lead performs observational and experimental health services research and health economics and outcomes investigation and manages collaborative relationships with internal and external partners to produce research that supports business decisions. The Research Consulting Lead works on problems of diverse scope and complexity ranging from moderate to substantial.

Humana Healthcare Research needs your strategic leadership and knowledge of academia and research methods to generate the evidence and content to position Humana as a thought leader in the healthcare industry. The Research Consulting Lead will ensure Humana and its academic partners meet our collaborative research goals. Humana Healthcare Research collaborates with key academic partners to produce relevant and credible research that provides insight into the practice of evidence based medicine, health outcomes, health policy, and more. Humana Healthcare Research is seeking a Research Consulting Lead to support thought leadership activities to ultimately strengthen the Humana brand, inform health policy and support the enterprise business strategy. The main responsibilities of the Research Consulting Lead include, but are not limited, to the following activities:

  • Defines and guides academic research collaboration strategy, including the identification of academic partners and community partners and subsequent establishment and maintenance of those relationships.

  • Ensures Humana and its research partners meet collaborative targets related to research output, including grant funding.

  • Works closely with Humana Healthcare Research leadership and the Chief Medical Officer to support and provide thought leadership content – this includes the support of Humana’s thought leadership evidence catalogue, as well as editorials and opinion pieces.

  • Serves as primary research methodologist and consultant, leading study design, methodology, analyses, and interpretation and communication of results

  • Ensures collaborative research aligns with Humana’s Thought Leadership Research Agenda and leads thought leadership evidence portfolio development as needed

  • Understands Humana’s business needs and the health policy environment, in order to identify areas and studies of mutual interest, being comfortable with a broad range of healthcare research topics including clinical sciences, health policy, and population health.

  • Explores mechanisms by which Humana might fund or recognize research with academics, including research awards at various forums, research grants, and more.

  • Establishes, supports, and maintains governance processes for research collaborations as needed; varies by research partner.

  • Ensures internal business partners and Humana leadership are appropriately informed of research collaboration activities.

  • Prepares comprehensive documents, including statements of work, study protocols, executive summaries.

  • Participates in medical writing tasks and publishes at scientific forums (see Medical Writer role description; exact portion of time to be agreed upon with leader).

  • Travel up to 10-15%

Required Qualifications

  • Masters or PhD with healthcare / research -oriented focus (e.g., health services, public health, epidemiology, outcomes research, biostatistics)

  • 6+ years of relevant work experience

  • Ability to function as the primary research methodologist guiding research study design and execution.

  • Prior work experience in claims based research or health services research or health policy research in a managed care or a healthcare research organization

  • Excellent verbal and written communication

  • Ability to establish and maintain relationships with a diverse group of clinicians and academics

  • Attention to detail, ability to multitask, and ability to manage multiple projects and priorities

  • Demonstrated ability to lead and influence peers and leaders without direct authority

  • Strong business acumen and broad understanding of healthcare industry

  • Prior experience working with senior leadership across a large healthcare and/or academic institution

Preferred Qualifications

  • Teaching and/or research experience in higher education.

  • Demonstrated success identifying, submitting and obtaining research grants.

  • Strong understanding of research methodology and the managed care arena, and how it applies to health economics and outcomes research, epidemiology and safety, comparative effectiveness and late phase research.

  • Strong network with experienced health services and/or health policy researchers.

  • Health policy experience and expertise.
