General Job Description
This is a specialist position responsible for teaching private lessons to children and adults enrolled in the Music Preparatory Division; providing support for all Music Prep areas; recruiting for and maintaining studio; participating in Music Prep activities such as teacher meetings, fundraisers, registration and recruiting assignments. Responsible for evaluating progress of students, preparing students for recitals, and encouraging students to participate in festivals, theory tests and performance opportunities. Works under close supervision, with minimal latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Reports to the director, Music Preparatory Division.
Essential Job Functions
- Prepares for each teaching session.
- Recruits new students.
- Conducts individual assessments of student progress.
- Communicates effectively with parents, student and colleagues.
- Prepares students for recitals.
- Encourages students in their music studies.
Non-Essential Job Functions
- Assists with special projects as assigned.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Knowledge of, or the ability to learn, university policies and procedures.
- Ability to teach the instrument being taught.
- Ability to communicate effectively to children, parents, university faculty and staff, and the general public.
- Ability to work evenings, nights and weekends as needed.
Bachelor’s degree required.
Required Experience and Training
Practical experience sufficient to teach an instrument.
Master’s degree in music.
Special Conditions for Eligibility
This is a security-sensitive position subject to criminal record check. This is an IT-sensitive position subject to the Computer and Network Security policy.
Min Pay Rate $30 per hour
Mid Pay Rate
Salary Information Hiring Salary - Based on attainment of bachelor's or master's degree, Commensurate with Experience

This position is NOT eligible for participation in the Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS) retirement plan, subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
